July 17, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2017-18.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at the phenomenal freshman season from pitcher Drey Jameson.
Baseball's Drey Jameson Named MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year
Jameson had some ups-and-downs early in the spring before really showing his potential in the conference portion of the schedule. In three innings of relief against Iowa on Feb. 24, the righty struck out nine batters, but was also charged with four runs allowed. Jameson's first collegiate start did not go as planned as he allowed three runs and four hits in the first inning.
However, the native of Greenfield, Indiana, regrouped and became a key starter against MAC foes. Jameson struck out eight and held Central Michigan to just three hits in six innings of work on April 1. The following weekend, he tossed a complete-game shutout and struck out 10 batters in a 5-0 win at Eastern Michigan.
Later in the month of April, Jameson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a victory over Northern Illinois. He was nearly as good against Western Michigan on May 18 when he held WMU hitless through the first 4.2 innings and only allowed one hit over his six innings pitched.
By the end of the season, Jameson had worked his way up to Ball State's No. 2 spot in the pitching rotation. He finished the year with a 7-2 overall record and a 3.88 ERA over 72 innings. In his 18 appearances, the righty struck out 97 batters, the second most by any freshman in the nation, and held opposing batters to a .203 batting average. He notched quality starts in six of his nine conference starts. In league games, Jameson ranked among the top four pitchers in ERA (2.08), opponent batting average (.171), strikeouts (70), wins (6) and runs allowed (15).
Jameson was Ball State's lone representative on the All-MAC first team and also earned MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year accolades. He was later named to two Freshman All-America teams – Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
Ball State wrapped up the 2018 season with a 32-26 record and finished tied for second in the MAC standings with a 17-10 league ledger.
