MUNCIE, Ind. – With the leadership of Ball State's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), student-athletes and staff representing Ball State Athletics and many of its sports teams will brave the cold and walk a mile on Saturday, Feb. 21to help bring hope to the hungry, the homeless and those broken by addiction in the Muncie and Yorktown communities.
That is the theme of Muncie Mission's annual initiative to lift hopes, raise awareness and find support for those in need. The annual "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" event promotes a 2026 goal of $175,000, raised predominantly by sponsors and pledges for walkers who brave mid-February temperatures while walking from the Muncie Fieldhouse to the Muncie Mission.

Now in its 22nd year, the walk has been conducted on Muncie streets every February since 2004. Ball State student-athletes and staff will walk with thousands of annual participants with hopes of increasing support and awareness for the community's homeless, and beneficiaries of the Muncie Mission's care. The importance of the revenue from Walk a Mile in my Shoes is substantial. Services to men, women and families are funded through this event and it is vital to the continuation of the Mission.
An initiative of Ball State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), over 100 Ball State athletes took part in last year's walk-a-mile event, despite numerous teams competing on the road.
"I am proud of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for its vision and leadership in service to our community," said Ball State Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "We are privileged on our campus to enjoy love, warmth and resources to prosper in our everyday lives, but we realize that not everyone in our community is as fortunate. As our student-athletes strive for success in their athletic and academic pursuits, I think it's wonderful to see their compassion and energies spent in this civic and philanthropic endeavor to benefit Muncie."
Registration for the walk begins at 8:00 a.m., with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m., prior to the mile-long walk that begins at Muncie Central High School. Students, fans and other local residents who want to participate in the walk may register at MuncieMission.org/walk.

Others simply seek an escape."
