Bowling Green Stuns Ball State With Ninth Inning Comeback
April 20, 2018 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Host Bowling Green trailed the Ball State baseball team 5-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but struck for five runs to pull off a stunning 6-5 victory. Nick Neibauer came through with the game-winning RBI single.
In the ninth, Bowling Green (10-23, 5-6 MAC) went strike out, single, single, double, home run, double and single to pick up its second win when trailing after eight innings. Neil Lambert tied the game with a three-run home run off Ball State (17-19, 5-8) starter John Baker. Reliever Cody Freed then came on to try to push the game to extra frames only to give up a double to Jeff Scott and then the winning single to Neibauer.
Baker cruised through the first eight innings, holding the Falcons to four hits and striking out nine batters.
The Cardinals seemed to be in control after striking for three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to build a 5-1 lead. However, Ball State stranded 10 runners on base, including two in the third and two more in the fifth.
Junior Griffin Hulecki tallied three hits and an RBI while senior Seth Freed added two hits and two RBIs.
Ball State was 15-0 when leading after eight innings until today's loss.
The Cardinals will look to even the series tomorrow when the two teams meet at 1:05 p.m.
