Sallee Becomes Winningest Coach In Ball State Women's Basketball History
March 03, 2018 | Women's Basketball
YPSILANTI, Mich. - Ball State sixth year head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee became the program's winningest coach after the Cardinals defeated Eastern Michigan 88-63 Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center. Sallee's career record at Ball State is now 119-72 and passes former head coach Tracy Roller who coached at Ball State from 2001-08.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 24-5 on the season and 13-5 in Mid-American Conference action while Eagles fall to 10-19 overall and 6-12 in league play.
Senior forward Moriah Monaco tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 26 points and career best 15 defensive rebounds. The second highest scorer behind Monaco was teammate junior guard Jasmin Samz who chipped in a 21-point performance. Senior guard Frannie Frazier had 14 points for the game and senior forward Destiny Washington rounded out the double figure scoring with 12.
Eastern Michigan scored the first basket of the game but the Cardinals quickly took control at the 6:24 mark off of a 3-pointer from Frazier. The Cardinals could not get their shots to fall in the first quarter and went 7-of-19 from the field. Ball State would rely on its defense to take a 20-15 lead over the Eagles heading into the second frame.
The Cardinals started off hot in the second quarter shooting 76.9 percent from the field (10-of-13). With 2:11 left in the first half, Ball State had built its largest lead (40-27). Both Monaco and Samz had already reached double figures for the Cardinals and combined for 21 of the Cardinals 42 first half points. Ball State would take an 11-point advantage over the Eagles at intermission. The Cardinals relied on their defense in the first and second frames holding Eastern Michigan to only 11 field goals.
Ball State gained momentum early in the third quarter after putting together a 10-6 run to push the Cardinals lead to 52-37 by the media timeout. Monaco knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:08 on the clock to give Ball State a comfortable 20 point cushion. The Cardinals never looked back after that and continued to dominate the game on both ends of the court the remainder of the contest. Eastern Michigan could never get their offensive tempo going and the Cardinals strong shooting hand and defense would be too much for the Eagles to overcome.
The Ball State women's basketball team will play in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at approximately 30 minutes following the 5 p.m. contest in Quicken Loans Arena against the winner of No. 6 seed Western Michigan versus No. 11 seed Bowling Green which will be played Monday night in Kalamazoo. The Cardinals secured the No. 3 seed and the bye to the MAC Tournament with their 78-73 win over Toledo on Feb. 24 in Worthen Arena.
