Men’s Volleyball Looks to Pick up Two More MIVA Wins This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team will look to improve in the MIVA standings with two matches this weekend. The Cardinals will host Lindenwood on Friday, Mar. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Ball State will then welcome Quincy into Worthen on Saturday, Mar. 31 also at 7:30 p.m.
This weekend comes after Ball State took a major setback with losses at No. 6 Loyola and No. 10 Lewis. In the loss 3-0 loss at Loyola, Matt Szews led the team in kills with 12 along with two service aces and one assist. Blake Reardon and Matt Walsh each had seven kills. Walsh had a .417 hitting percentage along with a service ace, an assist and a block. Mitch Weiler had five digs, which led the team. Weiler, Parker Swartz and Anthony Lebryk each finished the night with three kills apiece. Jake Romano had 34 assists plus four digs. Adam Wessel and Ben Chinnici both also had four digs in the contest.
Against Lewis, Szews led the way for Ball State with six kills, three digs and two blocks. Swartz, Walsh and Reardon each added four kills apiece. Weiler and David Siebum knocked down two kills each. Weiler also had two service aces.
Scouting Lindenwood:
Ball State leads the all-time series, 14-2 and have won the last five matches. This marks the second meeting this season between the Cardinals and the Lions. The last matchup was back in February in St. Charles, Missouri. Ball State took down Lindenwood, 3-2 (19-25, 29-27, 27-29, 25-22, 15-12). Three Cardinals tallied double digit kills in that contest. Reardon had 12 kills for a .205 hitting percentage. He also had seven digs, two block assists and one service ace. Weiler also notched 12 kills along with eight digs. Swartz had 11 kills for a team-high hitting percentage of .562. Walsh had a team high six total blocks while added six kills. Siebum had six kills and three digs in the contest. Romano led the team in assists with 48 and in digs with 19.
The Lions have an overall record of 8-12, 2-8 in the MIVA. They are currently seventh in the conference standings. Ryan Vorderer, Connor Hipelius and Adam Brewster are the three Lions ranked in the MIVA. Vorderer is first in the conference in digs per set (2.63) and second in total digs (197). Hipelius is second in blocks per set with 1.15 while Brewster is fourth in assists per set with 9.80.
Scouting Quincy:
Ball State leads the all-time series against the Hawks, 49-5. Ball State has also won the last five straight matchups between the two teams. Earlier this season, the two teams battled in Quincy, Illinois where the Cardinals took down the Hawks, 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18). In that meeting, three Ball State Cardinals notched double digit kills once again. Reardon led the way with 15 while Walsh tallied 12 and Szews had 10. Walsh and Szews also each had two service aces. Walsh led the team in blocks with four with Romano adding two. Romano led the way in assists with 41. Weiler once again had a team-high in digs with 12 along with adding nine kills. Romano was right behind him in digs with 11.
Quincy is 12-14 overall this season, but sit at the bottom of the MIVA standings with a 0-10 conference record. Anthony Winter is one of the Hawks that can be found in the conference statistical rankings. Winter is third in the MIVA in kills with 283. Collin Merck is also in the rankings. Merck is first in digs (217) and third in digs per set (2.38).
Cardinal Facts:
As a team, Ball State is ranked in multiple statistical categories in the conference and nationally. The Cardinals are first in the MIVA and sixth nationally in digs per set (10.12). The team is also second in the MIVA in digs (921), block assists (337) and points (1402.5). Ball State is also third in the conference with 2.19 season solo blocks. Nationally, the Cardinals are 17th in kills per set (11.98) and 19th in assists per set (1.24).
Romano and Walsh are the two Cardinals ranked nationally. Walsh is 12th with a .393 hitting percentage while Romano is 24th in assists per set with 8.78.
The Cardinals are currently fourth in conference standings behind Loyola, Ohio State and Lewis. Ball State is on a two match losing streak, but will hope to change that this weekend. The Cardinals have a 6-9 road record, but are 7-2 inside Worthen.
