Szews’ Double-Double Highlights Exciting MVB Win Over Lindenwood

MUNCIE, Ind.—It was an exciting five set match inside Worthen Friday night as the Ball State men's volleyball team welcomed Lindenwood to town. The 12th ranked Cardinals were able to fight off the Lions with a 3-2 victory (18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 21-19).
Ball State was able to tally 64 total kills on 59 assists. The Cardinals also had 67 digs, 11 total team blocks and six service aces. Individually, three Ball State Cardinals were in double digits in kills. Matt Szews marked his second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs. Matt Walsh led the team in kills with 14 for a .423 hitting percentage. Walsh also had four blocks and one assist on the night. Ben Chinnici matched Szews with 12 kills. The dynamic freshman also had seven digs, two blocks and two service aces. Mitch Weiler along with Szews led the team in digs with 13. Weiler also had eight kills, four blocks, two assists and one service ace. Other powerful performances on the night included seven kills from Parker Swartz and five kills by Ryan Dorgan. Nick LaVanchy had 12 digs on the night with 11 added by Jake Romano. Romano also had a match-high 50 assists.
In the opening set, the Cardinals were able to pick up the first four points of the game. Ball State led by as many as five in the set before the Lions tied things up 12-12. The teams traded points for awhile, but Lindenwood eventually pulled away. The Lions took the set, 25-18. Walsh, Szews and Swartz all notched three kills each in the first set. Blake Reardon added two kills while Weiler knocked down one. Romano had eight assists along with two of Ball State's seven digs.
Ball State had 15 total kills on a .278 hitting percentage in the second set. The Cardinals also had 14 assists, 14 digs and five blocks. The Cardinals were able to outhit the Lions in the set, which led the Ball State set two victory, 25-21. Szews led the way in that set with four kills and five digs. Weiler and Chinnici each had three kills. Walsh and Weiler were able to tally two blocks apiece.
The third set saw eight tied scores and three lead changes before the Lions took the set, 25-21. Both teams struggled offensively each hitting less than .100. Ball State had 11 kills compared to Lindenwood's six. The Cardinals also had 16 digs, seven blocks and two service aces in the set.
The Cardinals held the Lions to a .091 hitting percentage while hitting .323 on their side in set number four. Szews and Chinnici each had three kills with two kills added by both Weiler and Romano. Romano, Szews and Chinnici also each racked up three digs apiece. As a team, Ball State also had 11 total digs, three service aces and 3.0 total team blocks. The Cardinals took the set 25-18 forcing a deciding fifth set.
The fifth set did not disappoint having nine tied scores and three lead changes. The first point of the final set went to Lindenwood while point number two went to Ball State. The back-and-forth continued throughout the set. The most either team was ahead was three points. Ball State saw six match point opportunities before ending the set on a Chinnici kill. The Cardinals took the set, 21-19. Walsh had five kills in the set with four added by Dorgan. Chinnici had three kills with one added by Swartz. Weiler had seven of the team's 19 digs, which lead the team. Dorgan added four digs with three added by both LaVanchy and Chinnici.
The Ball State men's volleyball team moves to 14-11 on the season and 7-4 in MIVA play. The Cardinals will be in action again tomorrow as they take on Quincy in Worthen at 7:30 p.m.
