SERIES HISTORY
Western Michigan leads the all-time series with Ball State by a count of 11-10-3. The Cardinals will look to even the series with a win on Friday. BSU won the last meeting with WMU earlier this season by a score of 3-0.
LAST MEETING WITH WESTERN MICHIGAN
Peighton Cook and Amanda Shaw scored early goals in the first half before Jenna Dombrowski buried a penalty kick in the second, and the Ball State University soccer team shut out Western Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Shaw, who scored the game winner in Ball State's previous match, was a catalyst for the offense from the first touch. She fed the ball to Cook at the top of the 18 in the second minute, and Cook buried the shot as she beat the keeper to the bottom left corner of the net. Shaw was credited with the assist.
Moments later, Shaw got her own chance at goal and came through with an impressive strike to the upper 90 to put BSU up 2-0 in just the 12th minute. The defense went to work for the remainder of the half as the Cardinals held that score going into the break.
The score stayed the same for the next 30 minutes, but Ball State was not satisfied with its lead as it continued to attack. Dombrowski made a run into the box in the 74th minute and drew a foul to be awarded a penalty kick. She stepped up to the spot and converted to deliver a third goal and put the match out of reach.
"We're not even at our best yet," Roberts said. "We're consistently getting better and the improvements are coming along. We're getting stronger and stronger as we go throughout the season."
Despite winning 3-0, BSU was surprisingly outshot 12-9 on the day. Shots on goal were even at six apiece. The defense was solid all day though, and Tristin Stuteville saved all six of the shots she faced. The Broncos had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Cardinals' defense cleared every one of them.
MASON WINS FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Ball State soccer's Tatiana Mason has been named the 2018 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year in addition to being selected to the All-MAC Second Team and All-Freshman Team. Joining Mason on the Second Team are teammates Paula Guerrero, Emily Simmons and Tristin Stuteville.
Mason has put together a stellar freshman campaign to date, scoring six goals and tallying three assists for 15 points. Her six goals lead all freshmen in the MAC. The Ann Arbor native was particularly clutch late in games as she led all MAC players with five game winning goals for the year. Mason's 15 points lead Ball State on the year.
QUARTERFINAL WIN OVER BUFFALO
Despite windy and rainy weather conditions, Paula Guerrero scored two goals including the game winner in double overtime to lift the Ball State University soccer team over Buffalo in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Briner Sports Complex.
"Today's outcome was obviously impacted by the weather conditions, but I was proud of how hard our team played and that they stuck with it to get the result we needed," said head coach Craig Roberts. "It was great to see Paula get those two goals, particularly the game winner. She works hard on those shots every day after practice and today it paid off."
The Cardinals struck first 18 minutes in when Buffalo was called for a hand ball on a corner kick that was sent into the box. Guerrero stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty kick to make it a 1-0 lead early on. The score would hold until halftime as BSU carried the advantage into the second half.
The wind picked up after halftime and Ball State could hardly clear any of Buffalo's attacks. The Bulls' took advantage as they were awarded a free kick just outside of the 18. Gurjeena Jandu launched a shot into the top right corner and scored the equalizer that would eventually force overtime.
The first overtime passed without many scoring chances, but Ball State was ready to capitalize on an opportunity come double overtime. The Cardinals drew a foul about 25 yards out and Guerrero stepped up to score her second goal of the match in the 105th minute. Her free kick nailed the crossbar and bounced down past the line to clinch the victory.
Ball State was solid offensively all afternoon as they tallied 17 shots to just six for the Bulls. Seven of those 17 shots were on goal for BSU. Buffalo was awarded five corner kicks to Ball State's four, and Tristin Stuteville made three saves throughout the match.
The Cardinals now prepare for a semifinal match against Western Michigan. BSU took down the Broncos, 3-0, when the two sides met earlier this season. The match will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, with the time to be announced. The location of that match is dependent on the outcome of the Bowling Green versus Eastern Michigan match.
