WBB Returns To Its Winning Ways With 79-58 Win At Kent State
January 20, 2018 | Women's Basketball
KENT, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with its 79-58 Mid-American Conference win at Kent State Satuday afternoon in the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play while the Golden Flashes fall to 9-10 on the year and 2-5 in MAC action.
Five players reached double figures for the Cardinals, with junior guard Carmen Grande and senior guard Frannie Frazier leading the pack with 15 apiece. Grande also recorded her 13th double-double of her career and seventh of the season after dishing out 10 assists. Senior forward Destiny Washington and junior guard Jasmin Samz each added 12 points while teammate senior forward Moriah Monaco ended the day with 10 points. Monaco has now scored in double figures 71 times for her career.
The Cardinals had taking a 13-2 lead over Kent State midway through the first quarter. Ball State was shooting 75 percent (3-of-4) from behind the arc which was led by Frazier who was 2-for-2 from 3-point range. The Cardinals looked like their old selves on both sides of the court but it was their defense that was the main story, as Kent State struggled to get its shots to fall (28.6 percent). The Cardinals outscored the Golden Flashes 26-to-14 in the first stanza while shooting 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the 3-point line.
It was the first time Ball State had outscored its opponent since the Akron game heading into the second frame. Ball State carried its hot shooting hand 55.2 percent (16-of-29) into the second stanza as the Cardinals took a commanding 49-31 cushion over Kent State at the half. The Cardinals have won every game this season when leading their opponent at intermission. At the half, Frazier and Samz had already reached double figures.
Kent State slowly began to chip away at the Cardinals halftime lead to come within 13 (57-44) at the media timeout of the third quarter. The Golden Flashes had outscored Ball State for the first time in the contest 13-to-8 with 4:55 on the clock. The Cardinals managed to draw fouls from the Golden Flashes as Ball State aggressively attacked the basket. The Cardinals shot 60 percent from the charity stripe and did not send one Kent State player to the foul line in the third quarter. Ball State managed to maintain its double figure lead heading into the final frame.
Ball State closed the game out strong defensively and stopped every attempt Kent State made to climb its way back into the contest. The Cardinals handed Kent State their third straight loss and gave head coach Brady Sallee his first career win at the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home when it hosts Bowling Green Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals won their first meeting over the Falcons, 84-73, on Jan. 6 at the Stroh Center.
