January 17, 2018 | Women's Basketball
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team's late fourth quarter run wasn't enough, as the Cardinals fell short to Toledo in a 72-66 loss Wednesday night in Savage Arena.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 14-3 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference while the Rockets improve to 13-5 on the year and 4-2 in league action.
For the second-straight game, senior forward Destiny Washington led the Cardinals in scoring with 19 points while teammate senior forward Moriah Monaco finished the night with 17. Monaco has now scored in double figures for the Cardinals 70 times in her career and she now moves into 10th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,356 career points.
Toledo jumped out to an early 18-7 lead midway through the first quarter, but an 11-2 run cut the Rockets' lead to two (18-16) heading into the second stanza. Washington had five points to lead Ball State in scoring for the quarter.
Ball State managed to tie the game twice in the second stanza but could never take the lead. It was a 29-25 ball game at the media time out but Toledo used an 8-3 run to close out the quarter to take a 37-28 edge over the Cardinals at intermission. Ball State's offense struggled in the first half, connecting on just 1-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Both Monaco and Washington had seven points apiece at the half.
In the third quarter, Monaco and Washington combined for 16 points to pull Ball State within four (46-42) at the 4:23 mark but unfortunately that wasn't enough as the Cardinals would head into the fourth frame still down, 57-48.
Ball State began to dig deep in the fourth stanza, making it a four-point (62-58) game at the media timeout. Layups from Monaco, junior guard Jasmin Samz and freshman forward Oshlynn Brown helped the Cardinals during the run. Washington's back-to-back baskets late in the stanza made it a one-point ball game (65-64) with 3:07 left but Toledo quickly answered with a quick 3-point basket on its ensuing possession that would put the Rockets back up by four. After that, Ball State's momentum ran out, and Toledo would hand the Cardinals their third league loss of the season.
