MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (14-2, 3-2 MAC) suffered a heartbreaking 84-80 loss to Mid-American Conference East Division leader Buffalo (13-3, 4-1 MAC) Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
Despite overcoming a 17-point deficit in the first half and outscoring Buffalo 28-to-16 in the third quarter, Ball State could never close it out in the final frame today.
Senior forward Destiny Washington had a dominant performance leading the Cardinals with 17 points after shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) from the field. Junior guard Carmen Grande recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 11th of her career after scoring 14 points while dishing out 11 assists. Ball State started the game off strong, taking a quick 6-2 lead over Buffalo after layups from Washington, Grande and Monaco. After that, Buffalo took control of the first quarter, putting together an impressive 27-6 run to take a commanding 29-12 cushion heading into the second frame. The Bulls key to success was from behind the arc, as Buffalo shot 71 percent (5-of-7) from the 3-point line while holding the Cardinals 0-for-4.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Bulls 21-to-16 and cut their once 17-point lead down to seven (40-33) by the 1:25 mark. The run for Ball State came over a two minute stretch that started at the 3:52 mark off of a layup from Brown which followed by baskets from Grande and Monaco. But Buffalo didn't sit quiet and would go back up by 12 (45-33) at intermission.
Washington opened the third quarter for the Cardinals with a 3-point basket, sparking a 15-0 Ball State run. The Cardinals regained the lead for the first time since the start of the contest (48-45) at the 5:12 mark after Brown was fouled on a layup by Buffalo's Mariah Suchan. Brown then completed the three-point play. After that, the game became a shoot- out as both teams traded baskets, Grande was sent to the line with 2.7 second left in the third stanza and would knock down 1-of-2 to knot the game 61-61 heading into the final period.
With the final 10 minutes left in the game, both teams were fighting for the lead. Buffalo finally pushed ahead of the Cardinals 74-67 at the 5:54 mark after the Bulls Katherine Ups hit three straight from behind the arc. Ball State never recovered after that despite its efforts losing its second game of the season.
