
No. 15 Men’s Volleyball Defeated by No. 7 Hawaii In Last Day of Outrigger Invitational

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The 15th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team lost its first game of the season Saturday night to No. 7 Hawaii, 3-1. The Cardinals were 2-1 in the 23rd Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Invitational.
Freshman Matt Szews led the team for the third straight game in kills with 13. Szews also had seven digs, four block assists and one ace. With his dominate performances in the Invitational, Szews was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Preseason All-MIVA selections, senior Brendan Surane and junior Matt Walsh, both had powerful performances in the final game of island play. Surane tallied 11 kills, seven digs and five block assists. Walsh had 10 kills and a team high six block assists.
Freshman Nick Lavanchy had a team high 12 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The opening set went to the Cardinals with a close score of 25-22. Ball State had 14 kills, 10 block assists and a .387 attack percentage in set one.
The Rainbow Warriors came back and won the next three sets. Hawaii took set two with a final score of 25-17. Surane and Szews both had three kills in set three, but the Cardinals fell 25-23. Junior Mitch Weiler led the team with four digs in set four, but Hawaii came out on top with a score of 25-21.
The Cardinals (2-1) will host the Shondell Active Ankle Challenge on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13. Ball State will take on Saint Francis on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals will then take on Penn State on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
