January 12, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind.– The No. 15 Ball State men's volleyball team defeated St. Francis in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 27-25) sweep Thursday night in the Shondell Active Ankle Challenge.
The opening set went to Ball State, 25-21. The Cardinals scored four straight points to make the score 15-7, a deficit that The Red Flash had a tough time overcoming. Ball State had 18 kills for a .389 attack percentage in set one.
Ball State went on to take the second set with a score of 25-22. The teams were tied at 22 before the Cardinals went on to score the final three points to win the set.
The Cardinals were losing 17-13 in the final set, but rallied to defeat The Red Flash, 27-25. Ball State racked up 12 kills, 14 digs and three blocks in the closing set.
Freshman Matt Szews had yet another powerful performance leading the team in kills with 16, including the winning point in all three sets. With his 54 kills on the season, Szews is one of three Cardinals with 30 or more kills.
"Szews is not the typical freshman," said head coach Joel Walton. "He has a high level of maturity and is that right hand man that we know we can throw the ball to. He does a nice job creating when situations aren't ideal."
"Our confidence is what makes us dynamic," said senior setter Connor Gross, who added 39 assists, one service ace and 11 digs in contest. "Szews has a really good arm and gives us confidence as a team."
Senior Brendan Surane tallied 12 kills on the day, putting him at 37 for the season. Surane now has 531 career kills, 22 away from passing Kevin Owens for 17th in the Ball State record books (during rally scoring). Junior Mitch Weiler had six kills in the contest, putting him at 30 for the season.
The Cardinals will be in action again tomorrow in day two of the Shondell Active Ankle Challenge as they take on No. 14 Penn State in Worthen Arena. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
