
Men’s Volleyball to Host Shondell Active Ankle Challenge For Home Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team will host the annual Shondell Active Ankle Challenge on Thursday, Jan. 12 and Friday, Jan. 13. The Cardinals will take on St. Francis Thursday at 7:30 p.m. No. 15 Ball State will then battle No. 14 Penn State on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In the 2016 season, Ball State traveled to St. Francis and fell to the Red Flash, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 13-15). Brendan Surane tallied 14 kills, leading the team. Mitch Weiler knocked down 11 kills in that match. The Red Flash are off to a 2-1 start in the 2017 season. They fell to Concordia University in their season opener, 1-3. St. Francis defeated California Baptist University (3-0) and Lindenwood (3-2).
Ball State and Penn State met up last year in University Park, Penn., where the Cardinals fell, 3-0 (15-25, 18-25, 19-25). Surane led the team in kills with eight. Weiler added seven kills while Matt Walsh tallied six. Penn State is 1-1 to start off this season. The Nittany Lions fell to UCLA in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, 3-0. In the second game of the tournament, Penn State defeated USC, 3-2.
The Cardinals are coming off a 2-1 finish in the Outriggers Resorts Volleyball Invitational. Ball State defeated Princeton (3-2) and Erskine (3-0), but fell to host No. 7 Hawaii (3-1). Freshmen Matt Szews and Nick Lavanchy had powerful performances in their first weekend of collegiate action and were named to the All-Tournament Team. Szews tallied a total of 38 kills, 19 in his college debut. That is the most kills in a season opener since Todd Chamberlin knocked down 20 in the 2009 season. Lavanchy recorded 28 digs in the three day island play, averaging 2.33 digs per set. His performances in Hawaii earned him the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honor.
After this week's action, the Cardinals will return to action Friday, Jan. 20 at Harvard. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
