Central Michigan Jumps on Ball State Early, Earns 7-3 Win

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Host Central Michigan scored multiple runs in three of the first four innings on the way to a 7-3 win over the Ball State baseball team Friday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
The Cardinals (21-14, 7-3 MAC) had won five straight league games entering today's contest. Central Michigan (8-26, 3-4) held Ball State to just five hits, its lowest output in 12 games.
Central Michigan scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Ryan Heeke's RBI double. The Chippewas extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning on just one hit. The home team capitalized on three walks and an error in the inning.
Daniel Jipping's two-run triple in the fourth made the score 6-0.
Ball State scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning, but was held hitless the final three frames.
Junior Alex Maloney extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run single. Fellow junior Zach Plesac added an RBI double late in the sixth inning.
Central Michigan starting pitcher Sean Rizzi (3-4) went 7.0 innings, struck out seven batters and gave up three runs to earn the win. Ball State starter Zach Plesac (3-2) left after three innings and allowed four runs to take the loss.
The two teams continue the three-game series tomorrow afternoon, April 16 with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m.
