Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From Western Michigan

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team took two games from visiting Western Michigan Sunday at Ball Diamond by scores of 21-1 and 13-3.
The Cardinals (21-12, 7-2 MAC), who also picked up a 7-2 victory over the Broncos (8-20, 1-5) yesterday, completed their first three-game sweep over WMU since 2003.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, Ball State notched season highs in both runs (21) and hits (21). Four Cardinals recorded a home run – junior Alex Call, junior Jarett Rindfleisch, freshman Griffin Hulecki and sophomore Colin Brockhouse. Meanwhile, junior Caleb Stayton finished 5-for-6 at the plate with his first career triple, two doubles and equaled a career high with six RBIs.
On the mound, junior Kevin Marnon (4-3) worked 7.0 scoreless innings, struck out five batters and did not allow a walk.
Game two saw Ball State break open the game with a five-run second inning. Stayton and fellow junior Matt Eppers each came through with two-out RBIs. Eppers capped the second with a two-run double to left center field.
Stayton led the offensive surge again with a 4-for-5 outing, which included a three-run home run in the seventh inning. The native of Goshen, Indiana leads the Cardinals in both home runs (seven) and RBIs (48) this season.
Sophomore righty Brendan Burns (5-1) earned his fifth win thanks to equaling a personal best with eight strikeouts over five innings.
Ball State is riding its longest winning streak of the season (six games) and has won nine of its last 10 overall.
Next up for the Cardinals is a road game at Indiana on Wednesday, April 13. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
