Indiana Rallies for 4-3 Win Over Ball State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team took a 3-1 lead over host Indiana early, but the host Hoosiers eventually rallied for a 4-3 win Wednesday night at Bart Kaufman Field. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Cardinals (21-13).
Ball State scored all three of its runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Sean Kennedy led off the frame with his third home run of the season to even the score at 1-1. Later in the inning with two outs, junior Zach Plesac doubled to the left center gap to score fellow juniors Caleb Stayton and Alex Maloney.
Indiana (18-13) tallied a run in the fourth and fifth innings to level the game at 3-3. Sophomore pitcher Colin Brockhouse (3-4) worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth inning, but gave up the winning run in the seventh.
The Hoosiers' Ryan Fineman notched his only hit of the game, a double down the right field line, to score Logan Sowers from first base in the bottom of the seventh to give Indiana the lead for good, 4-3.
Ball State had one more scoring chance in the eighth after Plesac doubled with two outs, but junior Matt Eppers could not come up with a hit.
Plesac and Stayton each recorded two hits for the Cardinals in the loss. On the mound, senior lefty Matt Haro started the game and allowed two earned runs in five innings. Junior closer BJ Butler held Indiana scoreless the final two innings.
Austin Cangelosi went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Hoosiers. The Indiana bullpen held Ball State to just two hits the final six innings.
Indiana has now won four straight meetings over Ball State and leads the all-time, 29-26.
Ball State returns to MAC action this weekend with a three-game road series at Central Michigan. Game one is set for Friday afternoon, April 15 at 3:05 p.m.
