
Men's S&D Topped By Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - Despite wins in four events, the Ball State men's swimming & diving team suffered a 181-107 setback at Michigan State's McCaffree Pool Saturday afternoon.
Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) was Ball State's top performer in the meet, collecting a pair of individual victories. After MSU posted wins in the first 11 events, Krupa brought the Cardinals to life with a first-place time of 4:51.49 in the 500 freestyle.
Three events later, Krupa added a first-place time of 2:00.14 in the 200 IM.
Also picking up an individual victory for the Cardinals was junior Tony DeBrota (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.), with a final wall touch of 54.51 in the 100 butterfly.
Ball State's final event win came in the 400 freestyle relay, when sophomore Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), junior Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.), Debrota and junior Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.) clocked out at 3:14.92.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action Monday, Jan. 17, when it competes in the IUPUI Relay Meet.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men's swimming and diving team returns to action Saturday, as they travel to Michigan State for the final meet of the 2010 calendar year. The Cardinals and Spartans swim-off at 2 p.m.
The Cardinals enter the meet with a 1-2 (1-1 MAC) record after a fourth-place showing at last weekend's EMU Invitational. The Spartans also competed at the meet, finishing one spot ahead of the Cardinals in third.
At the two day meet, sophomore Michael Weber helped lead the BSU squad by posting three individual top-12 efforts, to go along with four top-eight relay times. Weber took home seventh in the 100 backstroke (53.08), ninth in the 200 IM (1:58.25) and 12th in the 200 backstroke (1:58.25). He was also a member of the fifth-place 400 medley relay (3:31.29), sixth-place 400 freestyle relay (3:09.73), sixth-place 200 medley relay (1:35.82) and eighth-place 200 free relay (1:28.86).
Senior Mark Golden turned in a season-best time in the 1650 freestyle last weekend, clocking a time of 16:46.76. Sophomore Nicholas Stevens also logged a season-best time of 17:13.70 in the event.
Among other improvements for the Cardinals, Chris Krupa swam a season-best 1:54.19 in the 200 butterfly, while Andrew Hostetler clocked a season-best 4:19.18 in the 200 IM. Krupa's time in the 200 butterfly currently ranks eighth in the Mid-American Conference.
Junior Gavin McNeeley is the Cardinals' top-ranked swimmer holding the seventh slot in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.81 set at EMU (Oct. 30).
