
Swimming & Diving Sweeps Second At Indiana Intercollegiates

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Both the men's and women's swimming & diving squads captured second Saturday afternoon at the four-team Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue.
On the men's side, Ball State scored 386.5 points, trailing only Purdue which tallied 887.5 points. Indianapolis (341.5) placed third, while IUPUI (132.2) rounded out the field.
The Boilermakers also captured the women's title, scoring 718 points, followed by BSU (647), Indianapolis (308) and IUPUI (143).
The meet opened with the women's one-meter diving competition as Lisa Maertin was the Cardinals' top performer, taking home seventh place with a score of 225.55. The men's 3-meter event followed, with David Linn pacing the Cardinals with a score of 223.05 to take home fifth.
On the women's 3-meter board, Maertin once again paced the Cardinals with a seventh-place score of 223.30, while David White finished fifth on the men's 1-meter board with an effort of 202.20.
In the first swimming event of the meet, the women's 200 Medley Relay team of Kaitlin Jasmon, Lauren Harger, Maria Gramelspacher and Katie Bylsma posted a time of 1:49.78 to finish second behind Purdue's A squad. The men's top team of Tyler Dixon, Jordan Rantz, Chris Krupa and Ben Battjes placed fourth with a time of 1:39.55.
In the 200 freestyle, Mary Ehresman was the top non-Boilermaker, placing fifth with a clocking of 1:58.79, while Mark Golden paced the men with a ninth-place showing of 1:49.01. In the 50 free, Nicole Saulters placed third for BSU with a time of 24.75, while Austin Laska placed second with a clocking of 21.53.
Megan Ploetz followed with a third-place showing in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:14.33, while Andrew Hostetler was the top male finisher, collecting 10th with a time of 2:05.33. Gramelspacher was BSU's top women's performer in the 100 butterfly, taking home fifth with a time of 59.14, while Krupa paced the men with a fourth-place effort of 53.10.
Gramelspacher paced the BSU women for a second time in the 100 free (53.98), while Laksa earned his second top BSU finish of the day for the men, with a time of 48.19. Sara Hostetler followed with a second-place showing in the 100 backstroke, clocking in with a time of 1:00.47, while Dixon placed ninth (55.89) to lead the men.
In the longest event of the afternoon, Ehresman captured fourth for the women in the 500 free (5:10.16), while A. Hostetler collected eighth (4:54.16) for the men.
In the final individual event, Harger gave BSU its first and only first-place effort of the day, posting a time of 1:06.80 to win the 100 breast. On the men's side Rantz placed 10th to lead the men with a time of 1:02.07.
The final event of the day saw Saulters, Kelly Johnson, Joan Cullen and Andrea Campeau claim second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.26) for the women, while Laska, Casey Schroeder, Chris Steindorff and Josh Young took home third (1:28.02) for the men.
The Ball State swimming and diving program will have to wait until Oct. 31 to return to the pool, when the women's squad travels to Toledo for its Mid-American Conference opener at 6 p.m.

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State swimming & diving teams will compete in their first multi-team meet of the season Saturday, when they head to West Lafayette for the Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue at noon.

Fresh off victories over Eastern Illinois last weekend, both the BSU men's and women's swimming & diving team will compete against the Boilermakers, Indianapolis and IUPUI in the event.
Last weekend, the Cardinals' programs combined to score first-place efforts in 25 of a possible 32 events against EIU. Seven members of the men's squad posted individual victories last weekend, while 10 different women scored event wins.
