HARRIS, Mich. - - The 2026-27 season is officially here for the Ball State men's golf program, as the team hits the course for the 29th season under head coach Mike Fleck Sunday for the first two rounds of the Island Resort Invitational at the Sage Run Golf Club in Harris, Michigan.
It will be the second straight season the Cardinals open the year on the 7,200-yard course nestled in Michigan's upper peninsula. Much like last year, it will also be another early test for Ball State as six of the 12 competing teams finished in the top 100 nationally in last season's SCOREBOARD Powered by clippd rankings.
The good news, three of Ball State's five golfers have experience on the course, with both sophomore Luke Johnston and senior Cameron Young carding rounds of -3 (69) and junior Happy Gilmore firing a -2 (70) in last season's event.
Johnston will hold down the No. 2 spot in BSU's lineup over the extended Labor Day weekend, while Gilmore will play at three and Young at four. Johnston led the squad with a 72.15 scoring average last season, including playing 14 rounds at-or-below par. Gilmore boasted a 74.69 average, while Young finished the year at 74.75.
Bookending Ball State's lineup for the event are senior Avery Mahoney at No. 1 and sophomore Brody Sorrell at No. 5. While neither golfer played in the event last season, Mahoney finished the year with a 74.50 stroke average over 10 events, while Sorrell was second on the squad with a 72.40 average over seven events.
Cardinals' fans will also get a look at highly touted freshman Mattingly Upchurch, who will be playing as an individual at the Island Resort Invitational.
