Men’s Golf Surges in Second Round at Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Sophomore Luke Johnston and senior Aidan Gutierrez each shot -6 (64) in the second round Saturday afternoon, leading their respective Ball State teams to a strong finish on the opening day of the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club.
Johnston paired his six-under second round with an opening-round score of +1 (71) and currently leads the 96-player field at -5 (135). His effort helped the Cardinals' "A" team finished the 36-hole day of the event in second place overall at -3 (557).
Butler currently leads the 14-team field at -5 (555).
Gutierrez' effort helped Ball State's "B" squad climb four spots up the leaderboard after the opening round and into a tie for eighth at +20 (580). Thanks to his strong second-round effort, which included an eagle on the par 4, 264-yard third, Gutierrez climbed 66 spots up the leaderboard and is tied for ninth overall at E (140).
Overall, five Cardinals turned in sub-par rounds in the program's second tour of the 6,624-yard course.
Senior Cameron Young was one of those, aided by his first collegiate hole-in-one on the par 3, 153-yard sixth hole. His beautiful nine iron shot helped propel him to a round of -3 (67) and move him into a tie for third overall at -2 (138) after he shot +1 (71) to open the event.
Also turning in below par second rounds for the "B" team were sophomore Brody Sorrell at -3 (67) and sophomore Cameron Chattin at -2 (68).
Senior Avery Mahoney, representing the "A" squad, led the Cardinals in the opening round at E (70) and followed with a +1 (71) to enter Sunday's final round tied for 14th overall at +1 (141).
Action in the 54-hole event concludes Sunday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start back at the Delaware Country Club. Ball State's "A" squad will start on holes 1-4, while the "B" squad tees off on holes 12-15.
