Griffin's Walk-off Single Leads Cardinals to 2-1 Win over Kent State in 10 Innings
May 03, 2025 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Korbin Griffin hit a walk-off single up the middle with two outs in the tenth inning to score Dylan Grego and propel the Ball State baseball team to a 2-1 win over Kent State on Saturday afternoon at Shebek Stadium.
The Cardinals (32-15, 18-5 Mid-American Conference) regained their position at the top of the league standings with the win against the Golden Flashes (30-15, 17-6 MAC).
Grego and Nick Husovsky hit singles and Blake Bevis reached on a walk to set up Griffin's heroics and a celebration between first and second base. This was Ball State's third walk-off win of the year following game-ending knocks by Grego and Garrett Arnold earlier in the season.
The duo of Jacob Hartlaub and Owen Quinn limited the Kent State offense to one run in 10 innings, as Hartlaub worked 6.1 frames of one-run ball and Quinn went 3.2 shutout innings. Quinn (4-1) came on in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out and prevented the Golden Flashes from scoring.
Ball State got on the board in the third inning on an RBI single by Arnold to plate Grego on a cool day in Muncie. Kent State responded in the seventh with a sac fly for its only scoring of the day to tie the score at 1-1.
Grego went 3-for-4 with the pair of runs scored, and Husovsky added a pair of hits. Ben Giovannetti hit a double for the only extra-base hit of the day for either team.
Ball State won its second extra-inning game of season in as many tries after taking a 4-2 decision at Eastern Michigan in 14 innings back on April 4.
"Great team victory!" Ball State head coach Rich Maloney exclaimed. "Great pitching performances by Jacob Hartlaub and Owen Quinn. Solid defense and some timely hitting. Korbin Griffin got the big walk-off hit!"
Kent State's Peyton Cariaco (1-4) suffered the loss in 2.2 innings of work.
The Cardinals and Flashes are set to play the rubber match of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
