Women’s Golf Takes on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. - - In its final tune-up before hosting the 2025 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Delaware Country Club (April 20-22), the Ball State women's golf team travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational. The two-day event will be played Saturday and Sunday on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club.
Following a practice round Friday, the Cardinals hit the par-72, 6,319-yard course for the first 36 holes of the 54-hole event Saturday. Action is set to get underway at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and Ball State golfers teeing off on holes 8-12. The final 18 holes will be played Sunday morning with another 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Comprising the lineup for the Cardinals will be Sophie Korthuijs, Jasmine Driscoll, Sarah Gallagher, JJ Gregston and Sabrina Langerak.
Along with Ball State and host No. 17 Ohio State, the 13-team tournament field features MAC rivals Kent State, Ohio, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. In addition, No. 25 Michigan State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Youngstown State, Findlay (Division II No. 5) and Grand Valley State (Division II No. 8).
Overall, 69 players will be battling for the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational title.
NEWS & NOTES:
- Ball State earned its first tournament win of the season by capturing its second straight Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 16-17) team title … The Cardinals held a 17-stroke advantage over the tournament field after the first two rounds and cruised to an 11-stroke victory … Ball State finished at +14 (878) with Mid-American Conference rival Ohio placing second at +25 (889).
- Ball State has won three events under third-year head coach Cameron Andry … In addition to winning each of the last two Brittany Kelly Classics (2023 & 2024), the Cardinals took top billing at last season's Lady Jaguar Invitational.
- The Ball State women's golf program returned eight of nine golfers from last season's squad which produced a new program standard for scoring average at 303.61 strokes … They also helped the team establish program records for lowest team round (285 / -3), lowest 36-hole total (580 / +4) and lowest 54-hole total (865 / +1).
- In fact, five of the returners - Jasmine Driscoll, JJ Gregston, Sarah Gallagher, Madelyn Young and Madelin Boyd - helped the Cardinals break the lowest 36-hole total for the third time in the last two seasons by combining for a 579 (+3) over the opening two rounds of the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic … The previous 36-hole record was 580 (+4) set at the Diamante Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-24, 2024), just ahead of the 584 (+8) set at the 2023 Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 18-19, 2023).
- Eight stroke play events into the 2024-25 season, and the Cardinals are already threating to break last season's scoring average record … Ball State currently has a 300.35 stroke average, with its golfers owning 19 rounds at-or-below par so far this year … Three members of the squad are also averaging under 76 strokes per round, paced by junior Jasmine Driscoll at 75.13 … Freshman Sophie Korthuijs is right behind at 75.53, followed by junior Sarah Gallagher at 75.61.
- Freshman Sophie Korthuijs turned in the best tournament of her collegiate career at the Rio Verde Invitational (Feb. 21-23), leading all Mid-American Conference players and tying four fourth overall among the field of 104 players with a career-low 54-hole score of -1 (215) … She opened the event with a collegiate-low round of -2 (70) and followed with a +2 (74) and -1 (71) … One of just six players in the field to card an eagle, she was also one of just seven players to turn in multiple sub-par rounds in the event.
- For her play at the Rio Verde Invitational (Feb. 21-23), Sophie Korthuijs was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week on Feb. 27 … Korthuijs tied for fifth among the field with a par 4 average of 3.92 (-2), while tying for fifth on the par 5s with a 4.80 (-3) average … Along with her eagle, she also recorded seven total birdies and 37 total pars in her three days on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde CC.
- After tying for ninth with a score of +9 (225) at the Georgia State Invitational (March 24-25), junior Jasmine Driscoll enters the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational ranked first in program history with a 76.03 career scoring average … She is just ahead of Kiah Parrott's (2021-24) mark of 76.06 and Brittany Kelly's (2008-11) career average of 76.46 … Driscoll has played 15 career rounds at-or-below par, with career-low rounds of 68 in the third round of the 2023 Boilermaker Classic and in the second round of the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic.
- Jasmine Driscoll was named the MAC Women's Golfer of the Week on Sept. 19 for her play at the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 16-17) … Driscoll won the event by five strokes, which was the largest margin of victory in the three-year history of the event, and helped the Cardinals claim an 11-stroke win over the 12-field team … After shooting E (72) in the opening round, Dricsoll tied the lowest round of her collegiate career at -4 (68) in the second … She closed the event with a -1 (71), with her 54-hole final score of -5 (211) being the best of her collegiate career, five strokes better than her previous mark.
- Junior Sarah Gallagher is not far behind with a 76.28 career scoring average, moving ahead of Brittany Kelly's (2008-11) 76.46 career mark thanks to her play over the last three events in which she has average 74.75 strokes per round … Gallagher earned Second Team All-MAC honors and MAC All-Tournament Team accolades after placing fourth at the 2024 MAC Championships with a score of +9 (225) … She has played nine career rounds at-or-below par, with a career-low round of 70 to open the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic.
- Sophomore JJ Gregston has shined through the first eight stroke play events of the season, ranking second on the squad with 56 total birdies over her 414 holes played … She is fourth on the squad with a 76.30 stroke average, including a career-low round of -3 (69) in the second round of the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 16-17), one of her eight collegiate rounds at-or-below par … Throw in her solid freshman campaign and Gregston currently ranks fifth in program history with a 76.87 stroke average.
- After originally electing to redshirt for the 2024-25 season, senior Sabrina Langerak has battled her way back into the team lineup thanks to a recent NCAA rule change which granted players who started their careers at non-NCAA institutions an extra season of eligibility … Langerak played two seasons at NAIA Taylor University before reuniting with head coach Cameron Andry at Ball State last season … Langerak made her 2024-25 debut at the Puerto Rico Shootout (March 4-5) and was the squad's fourth-best performer at the Georgia State Invitational (March 24-25) where she shot +16 (232) … Langerak's effort at the Rivermont Golf Club included a season-low round of +1 (73) to open the event … She owns a Ball State career average of 79.18 over 33 rounds, including a pair of rounds at-or-below par.
- Junior Madelin Boyd fired a season-low round of +1 (73) in the second round of the 50th Lady Paladin Invitational (Sept. 20-22) and tied the mark in her final round of the Diamante Intercollegiate (Oct. 20-22) … Her effort at the Lady Paladin was the second-lowest round for a Ball State golfer during the event and was BSU's lowest score of the round … Boyd owns a career-low round of -3 (69) in the first round of the 2023 Diamante Intercollegiate.
- Sophomore Jenna Estravillo made some noise at the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 16-17), leading the field's 12 individual players by placing 13th overall with a score of +6 (222) … The effort ties as the lowest 54-hole score of her collegiate career and started with a season-best round of E (72) … Estravillo shot a career-low round of -2 (70) to open the 2023 Brittany Kelly Classic.
- In addition, Jenna Estravillo turned in a brilliant performance at the Puerto Rico Shootout (March 4-5), tying for 19th overall with a score of +4 (148) … She put together rounds of +3 (75) and +1 (73) to tie for the team lead and to tie as the best individual player in the field.
- Sophomore Madelyn Young shined in her final round of the 2024 Fall slate, firing a career-low score of E (72) at the Diamante Intercollegiate (Oct. 20-22) … The effort helped her finish with a career-low 54-hole score of +15 (231), which included a second round +6 (78) … Over 14 rounds this season, Young has compiled a 77.79 stroke average.
- Senior Payton Bennett has played in a pair of events for the Cardinals this season, including the Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 16-17) in which she produced a season-low round of E (72) … Over 61 career rounds, Bennett has produced an 80.38 career average and has a pair of scores at-or-below par.
