JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - - Three members of the Ball State women's golf team finished in the top 16 of the Georgia State Invitational Tuesday, helping the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish among the 15-team field at the Rivermont Golf Club.
Leading the way for Ball State in the final round on the 5,945-yard course was junior Sarah Gallagher who shot +1 (73) on the day. The effort tied as the team's third-lowest round of the event and helped Gallagher climb 10 spots into 14th place among the 86-golfer field at +9 (225).
"Sarah had a really solid round," head coach Cameron Andry said. "She's a mature player, so she doesn't get rattled very easily, which was evident today."
After a rough start, with three bogies in her first four holes, Gallagher settled in and registered five straight pars. She then birdied the par 4, 260-yard 11th and closed her round with two more birdies over her final four holes. Overall, Gallagher finished the tournament with six total birdies.
Freshman Sophie Korthuijs turned in Ball State's second-best final round at +3 (75) and would finish 16th overall at +10 (226). Her day included four total birdies, including back-to-back red numbers on holes 10 and 11. Korthuijs tied for team-high honors with 10 total birdies over the 54-hole event.
"Sophie continued her really solid spring," Andry said. "She's playing some good golf, and I think she still has another gear or two."
Also tallying 10 birdies for the Cardinals was junior Jasmine Driscoll, who entered the final round as the tournament co-leader. Unfortunately, a rough day on the course saw Driscoll finish tied for 12th overall at +9 (225).
"I know Jasmine is disappointed in how today went, but every time you put yourself in contention you have an opportunity to learn," Andry added. "Some of the lessons are learned the hard way, like today, but seeing your name at the top of the leaderboard is something you have to learn how to handle as well."
Along with Gallagher and Korthuijs, Ball State counted rounds of +7 (79) from sophomore JJ Gregston and +8 (80) from sophomore Jenna Estravillo in the team's final team tally. Each recorded one birdie in their rounds, while collecting 11 and nine pars, respectively.
On the individual front, it was another solid day for senior Sabrina Langerak, who shot +5 (77) to finish the tournament tied for 35th at +16 (232). Sophomore Madelyn Young followed with her second straight round at +6 (78).
Lindsey Wilson's Butpapaporn Sukterm, the top-ranked NAIA player, won the individual title by finishing the tournament at E (216). Queens took home the team title with a final score of +30 (894).
Overall, Ball State finished the tournament at +41 (905), including a +19 (307) in its final round. The Cardinals were the top Mid-American Conference team in the field, with Bowling Green placing eighth at +53 (917) and Akron taking 11th at +65 (929).
"Today didn't go how we had hoped," Andry added. "We just never got anything going to allow us to make a run at the top of the leaderboard. However, We battled until the end which is what I really appreciate about this group."
The Ball State women's golf team returns to action April 12-13 at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational, which will be played on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club.
