February 22, 2025 | Women's Golf
RIO VERDE, AZ -- Another solid round from freshman Sophie Korthuijs paced the Ball State women's golf team on the second day of the Rio Verde Invitational on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde CC.
Â
Overall, the Cardinals finished the day in fifth place among the 21-team field with a total score of +21 (597) after shooting +16 (304) on the day. Ball State is currently the top Mid-American Conference team in the field, two strokes ahead of sixth-place Central Michigan. A total of six league teams are in action at the meet.
Â
"We weren't quite as sharp today, but I thought we did a nice job of battling," head coach Cameron Andry said. "I was really proud of Sophie. After such a good round yesterday, we knew today would be a different challenge mentally and she handled it really well. She didn't have her best stuff but still found a way to grind out a good score."
Â
Korthuijs followed her collegiate-best round of -2 (70) Friday, by shooting +2 (74) Saturday and enters Sunday's final round tied for sixth among the 104-player field at E (144).
Â
Starting on hole 10, Korthuijs birdied the par-4 11th for a second time on the weekend and added another birdie on 18 to make her turn at +1. After a bogey to start the front nine, she finished with eight straight pars.
Â
Also turning in another solid round was junior Jasmine Driscoll, who finished second on the squad on the day with a score of +4 (76). Throw in her -1 (71) Friday, and she currently sits tied for 14th among the field at +3 (147). Driscoll's second round include 11 pars and birdies on the par-3 third and the 18th.
Â
Ball State's three remaining players all shot +5 (77) on the day. The effort has junior Sarah Gallagher tied for 29th at +6 (150), junior Madelin Boyd tied for 72nd at +12 (156) and sophomore JJ Gregston tied for 74th at +13 (157).
Â
"Jasmine had a rough stretch early in her round but battled and was able to get a couple back coming in," Andry said. "JJ hit the ball much better and was close to putting it all together today save for a few short game and putting miscues. Maddy and Sarah are both fighting for every shot and hopefully they can get it going in tomorrow's final round."
Â
Gregston led the final trio with a pair of birdies, while Boyd added one. Gallagher and Boyd each played 12 holes at par, while Gregston made 10.
Â
The Ball State women's golf team closes play in the Rio Verde Invitational Sunday with a 10:30 ET / 8:30 ET shotgun start back at the Rio Verde Country Club. The Cardinals are currently slated to start on holes 4-7.
