February 10, 2025 | Women's Golf
CLERMONT, Fla. - - The Ball State women's golf team dispatched of both Northern Iowa (4.5-1.5) and Mid-American Conference rival Toledo (4.0-2.0) Monday to advance to the championship match of the Rust Buster Match Play.
Â
"I am really proud of the way we competed today," head coach Cameron Andry said. "We had to deal with some adversity with Jasmine being a late scratch this morning due to illness, but everybody stepped up in a big way."
Â
In its first spring competition of the season, the event co-host Cardinals used big performances from junior Sarah Gallagher and sophomore Jenna Estravillo to win the opening match versus the Panthers.
Â
"Jenna was fantastic in her opening match," Andry said. "She came through clutch, especially considering she didn't know she was competing until an hour before it started."
Â
Meanwhile, it was the final four in the lineup which earned clutch victories on the 6,003-yard, par-72 Kings Ridge Golf Club course to seal the victory over the Rockets.
Â
Junior Madelin Boyd and sophomore Madelyn Young each picked up a pair of wins on the day, while freshman Sophie Korthuijs clinched the final match with a par on her 16th hole for a 4&2 victory.
Â
Boyd had the longest day for Ball State, playing all 36 holes and battling to win both her matches 1Up, while Young earned a pair of 3&2 victories.
Â
"Boyd came through with two big wins," Andry exclaimed. "She was a great competitor and just found a way to get a point on the board in both matches. Young is a fierce competitor and match play brings out the best in her. She just has a refuse to lose attitude, and it shows."
Â
The Ball State women's golf team will battle Omaha tomorrow at 8 a.m. for the Rust Buster Match Play title. The top-seeded Mavs advanced to the championship match with a 6-0 win over Western Illinois and a 4-2 victory over co-host Murray State.
