Five Cardinals Separated by One Stroke; Gilmore Shines in Purdue Individual Event
September 22, 2024 | Men's Golf
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ball State's best performance during opening rounds of the Purdue Fall Invite came as part of a simultaneous individual event with freshman Happy Gilmore (71-60—140) firing 2-under part to sit in fourth place out of 36 competitors on Purdue's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
In the team event, Avery Mahoney paced Ball State in the first round, Kash Bellar led the Cardinals in the second, and after 36 holes of the Purdue Fall Invite, the Ball State men's golf team sits in 12th place with four Cardinals tied with matching scores.
Through the first 18 holes on the par-72, 7,461-yard Kampen-Cosler Course, Ball State found itself in fifth place – six over par and two strokes ahead of host Purdue – after Mahoney fired even par in his best round of the season so far. But after a second round at 17 over par on Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals slipped seven spots heading into Monday's final round.
Mahoney, a sophomore transfer from Eastern Michigan, had three birdies in his opening round and just two holes over par. In the second round, it was senior veteran Bellar who paced the lineup at +2, finishing with a pair of birdies to counter four bogeys and rebound from a 6-over par first round.
Overall, Braxton Kuntz (73-78—151), Ali Khan (74-77—151), Carter Smith (75-76—151) and Mahoney (72-79—151) all tied on the first day of action, finishing seven strokes above par and just one ahead of Bellar (78-74—152).
Following Gilmore in the individual event, junior Colin Nasser was 21st and freshman Gavin Hare was 27th.
Tee times on Monday begin at 9:00 a.m.
