MUNCIE, Ind. - - After months of preparation, the Ball State men's swimming & diving program will put all its hard work to the test this week at the Shea Natatorium for the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships.

Action in the four-day meet hosted by Southern Illinois begins Wednesday (March 6) with a pair of relay swims. Individual action gets underway Thursday (March 7) and will run through Saturday (March 9).

Ball State will be looking to build upon last season's success at the MAC Championships, in which it broke 12 program records, won a pair of event championships and claimed 11 total medals.

Ball State scored a total of 457 points and finished fourth overall as a team. It was the program's second-highest point total at the MAC Championships since 2005, trailing only the 511.50 scored in 2021.

AT THE 2023 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The Cardinals opened the 2023 MAC Championships with a bang, winning the 200 medley relay with a program record time of 1:26.35. It was Ball State's first MAC relay title since winning the 200 free and 200 medley relays in 1996.

Overall, the Cardinals broke all five relay records at the four-day meet including the 800 freestyle relay (6:37.50), 200 freestyle relay (1:19.35), 400 medley relay (3:12.42) and 400 freestyle relay (3:12.42). BSU also took second in both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay, as well as third in the 400 medley relay.

On an individual front, Joey Garberick earned First Team All-MAC honors after winning his third straight title in the 100 breaststroke with a program record time of 52.17. He would also place second in the 200 breaststroke at 1:57.69.

Porter Brovont was a two-time silver medalist, taking second on both the 1M (303.65) and 3M (298.00) diving boards. The effort helped him earn MAC Freshman Diver of the Year honors, as well as Second Team All-MAC accolades.

Owen Chaye also claimed a pair of medals and second Team All-MAC honors by placing second in the 100 freestyle with a program record time of 43.58 and third in the 50 freestyle with a program record effort of 19.89.

Rounding out Ball State's medalists was Bryce Handshoe with a third-place effort tin the 100 fly (48.13). Handshoe's prelim time of 47.93 was a program record, as was his 200 butterfly finals time of 1:47.75

Along with the 10 program records above, the Cardinals received new standards from Zach Zishka in the 400 IM (3:57.18) and Jacob Siewers in the 200 freestyle (1:38.80).

IN THE MAC RANKINGS:
In the latest NCAA Division I Top Time Rankings as compiled by CollegeSwimming.com, the Cardinals have 15 student-athletes ranked in scoring position in their respective events heading into the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Senior breaststroke specialist Joey Garberick is BSU's top-ranked student-athlete, holding the top spot in both the 100 (52.69) and 200 (1:58.67) breaststroke events.
