February 10, 2024 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - After falling behind in a tightly contested doubles point, the Ball State men's tennis team earned five singles points en route to a 5-2 victory at home over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-3 on the season while the Vikings drop to 6-2 on the year.
The match started off very competitive in doubles play. Ball State had the early lead on the top court, but Cleveland State won the next four games to take the 6-2 win. Courts two and three were close, so close in fact that the score was 6-5 for Vince Orlando and Parrish Simmons against the Vikings' duo of Kade Mindry and Nicholas Jamison. Unfortunately, Mindry and Jamison would end up clinching the doubles point for Cleveland State with a 7-5 victory. On court three, Cleveland State was leading 5-4 before play was abandoned.
The Cardinals completed their come-from-behind victory after taking five of the six singles matches from the Vikings.
Broc Fletcher exited the court first with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Cleveland State's No. 6 player Alan Matyjas.
After that, it was a domino effect for BSU as Orlando won in straight sets on court No. 3, increasing the Cardinals lead to 2-1. Shortly after, Webster registered a two-set victory on the top court pushing BSU's lead even further, 3-1. Eli Herran then claimed match point for the Cardinals after beating Jamison at the No. 4 spot in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Sajin Smith rounded out the wins today for BSU's fifth point of the match.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues non-conference action on Friday, Jan. 16 at IUPUI. First serve is at noon.
