Cardinal Golfers Visit Little Rock for Everett Buick GMC Classic, Monday and Tuesday
October 12, 2024 | Men's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Following a pair of 10th-place finishes at the Purdue Fall Invite and the Badger Invitational, Mike Fleck's men's golf team undergoes a bit of transition this week as freshmen Happy Gilmore and Gavin Hare both enter the Cardinals' starting lineup this week in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Fleck's lineup remains the same in the top positions with seniors Braxton Kuntz, Ali Khan and Kash Bellar holding down the No. 1, 2 and 3 lineup slots, but Gilmore will play at No. 4 and Hare at No. 5 in the club's first tournament this season with both freshman. To date, Gilmore and Hare have been among the Cardinals' most consistent golfers and routinely have finished among Ball State scoring leaders. Hare, making his first start this week, played as an individual at Wisconsin two weeks ago and found himself in third place overall after the first day of competition with a 3-under par 69. Gilmore shot even par that day and Hare's 69 was Ball State's lowest score of the tournament.
"I'm looking for a more solid approach and mentality this week in Little Rock," said Ball State coach Mike Fleck. "We've challenged our leaders and our freshmen have earned this based on where each of these guys have been over the course of the fall. We are excited to see Gavin and Happy compete in our lineup while also encouraging our core group of veterans to bring consistency and competitive contributions into the mix at a level I know they can."Â
The three seniors anchor Ball State's veteran lineup and playing as an individual this week is junior Carter Smith. Play in Little Rock begins Monday with a shotgun start at Chenal Country Club at 8:30 a.m. CT. Fifteen teams will play 36 holes Monday, then play a final round of 18 holes with another shotgun start on Tuesday, at 9 a.m. CT. The Chenal course is 7,115-yard layout with a par of 72.
