MUNCIE, Ind. – Embarking on their third tournament of the fall season, the Ball State men's golf team ventures to Madison, Wisconsin, this week to take part in the Badger Invitational beginning Sunday, Oct. 1. The Cardinals join 18 other schools in the three-day, 54-hole competition that will play on a 7,286-yard track at University Ridge Golf Course.
Ball State's five-man lineup includes Carter Smith, the champion of the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational two weeks ago and a back-to-back recipient of Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week accolades following a third-place finish at the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff in Missouri. Joining Smith are Kash Bellar, Griffin Hare, Braxton Kuntz and Ali Khan.
"I'm really excited for us to get back to competition at the Badger Invite," said Ball State coach Mike Fleck. "University Ridge is a championship Big Ten venue and will be a good test of where we are after couple weeks of qualifying and preparation at home. Wisconsin's field is very good and has a few other MAC schools competing so it will give us a good feel of where things shake out early on within the conference. This starts a big three-week stretch of events for our young men to continue to prove themselves and compete."
Ball State won its home competition at the EY Invite and finished fourth at the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff. Participating teams this week include Campbell, Central Arkansas, Eastern Michigan, Florida Gulf Coast, Illinois State, Long Beach State, Loyola of Chicago, Marquette, Maryland, MTSU, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, South Alabama, South Dakota State, VCU, Western Carolina and Wisconsin.
A sixth Cardinal golfer, Alec Cesare, will compete in an individual event Wisconsin is hosting simultaneously at TPC Wisconsin, with 36 holes played Sunday and the final 18 on Monday.
