Cardinals' 9-Under Par Second Round Tops All 18 Schools
MADISON, Wis. – Kash Bellar caught fire with a 4-under par 68 on Monday to catch Ball State teammate Braxton Kuntz and move into a five-way, third-place tie among 90 golfers at the Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Racing through a 7,271-yard, par-72 track at University Ridge Golf Course, Bellar started where he left off on the final nine holes Sunday when he carded a 2-under 34 to stay in contention. Teeing off on the 10th hole Monday, he birdied four of his first seven holes and shot a 4-under 32, avenging a back-nine scorecard of 37 to begin the tournament yesterday.
Bellar raced into contention with six birdies on Monday, catching the consistent Kuntz who shot eight straight holes of par on Sunday, and duplicated the feat again Monday. The Cardinal duo joins a tandem from Florida Gulf Coast as the only groups of teammates among the event's top eight golfers.
Florida Gulf Coast (560) leads the event after two rounds, followed by Nebraska (565), Middle Tennessee State (566), Virginia Commonwealth (568) and Illinois State (571) to round out the top five. Ball State (573) and Central Arkansas (573) are tied for sixth place with Long Beach State (574) one shot behind in eighth.
Bellar was not the only Ball State golfer to improve after the first round. Ali Khan also shot 4-under 68 in the second round to match Bellar and blister the course after carding an 8-over par 80 on Sunday. Performances by Bellar, Khan and Kuntz fueled the Cardinals, whose 9-under second-round scorecard was the best of all 18 teams.
Braxton Kuntz: 35-35—70 | 34-35—69 (139)
Kash Bellar: 37-34—71 | 32-36—68 (139)
Ali Khan: 41-39—80 | 33-35—65 (145)
Carter Smith: 36-38—74 | 37-37—74 (148)
Griffin Hare: 35-44—79 | 37-41—78 (157)
Nearby at TPC Wisconsin with 26 individual golfers, Alec Cesare finished 54 holes of the Badger Individual event to finish in a ninth-place tie with Patrick Bruminhent of Northern Illinois. Cesare shot a 6-over par 77 on the first 18 holes. He shot a par-71 in round two Sunday evening and finished Monday with a 3-over 74.
