Cardinals Split Doubleheader with Broncos

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark on Saturday for a doubleheader to close out the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos won the first game, 10-1, but the Cardinals won game two, 15-3.
With the split, Ball State moved to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in league play, while Western Michigan is now 4-10 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Game One – WMU 10, BSU 1
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first in the top of third with five runs on six hits. Western Michigan added four runs in the top of the fourth and extended its lead to 9-0.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a Blake Bevis solo home run to left field. BSU cut the deficit to 9-1 after six innings of play.
WMU added a run in the top of the ninth.
Ty Johnson got the start on the mound for the Cardinals and went two innings. He struck out one batter and gave up one hit. Tanner Knapp went an inning in relief and surrendered eight earned runs on six hits. He got the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season. Ty Weatherly pitched five innings in relief and struck out four batters. He gave up four earned runs on three hits and two walks. Will Jacobson added an inning of relief and surrendered just one unearned run.
Dane Armbrustmacher picked up the win in 6 1/3 innings for the Broncos. He struck out six batters and gave up just one earned run on five hits. Hayden Berg went 2 2/3 innings in relief. He struck out four batters and gave up just two hits.
Game Two – BSU 15, WMU 3
Western Michigan scored first with two runs in the top of the third inning.
The Cardinals erupted for nine runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Bevis and Adam Tellier each tallied two RBIs. Nick Gregory, Ryan Peltier, Andrew Wilhite, Casey Turturici, and Decker Scheffler each produced an RBI in the inning.
The Broncos added a run in the top of the fourth.
Wilhite put the Cardinals up 10-3 with a solo home run to left field, his first homer of the season, in the bottom of the fourth.
Hunter Dobbins started the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a ground out by Scheffler. Bevis singled through the left side and drove in Dobbins. Justin Conant drew a walk and moved Bevis to second. Tellier added an RBI single through the right side as Bevis scored. Ball State took a 12-3 into the sixth inning.
Bevis led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field. Gregory drew a one-out walk and moved Bevis to second. Tellier drew a walk to load the bases for the Cardinals. Peltier delivered a walk-off double and cleared the bases as Ball State won 15-3.
Ryan Brown got the start for the Cardinals on the mound and went 3 2/2 innings. He struck out four batters and gave up three earned runs. Jacob Hartlaub got the win for BSU in 3 1/3 innings of relief. He improved to 2-2 on the season. He struck out four batters and gave up just one hit.
Luke Thelen fell to 0-2 on the season with two innings pitched. He had four strikeouts and surrendered three earned runs. Four other Broncos saw action in relief and combined for nine earned runs.
Ball State returns to action on Tuesday, March 14, as Purdue Fort Wayne. First pitch from the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark is scheduled for 3 p.m.
