Ball State Launches Four Home Runs to Ground Toledo

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returned to action on Friday for a Mid-American Conference matchup as Toledo made the trip to Muncie. Trennor O'Donnell recorded a career high in strikeouts, and Andrew Wilhite, Hunter Dobbins, Blake Bevis, and Justin Conant all hit a home run to power the Cardinals passed the Rockets 14-2.
With the win, Ball State improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Toledo fell to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Rockets got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third with a two-run homer to right field off the bat of Jeron Williams.
Wilhite led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo blast to right center. Decker Scheffler drew an eight-pitch walk. Bevis followed with a double to left center and drove in Scheffler to tie the game at 2-2. Conant put the Cards on top with a two-run homer to right center. Zach Lane singled to center. Adam Tellier followed with a single through the right side. Ryan Peltier notched an RBI single to right center as Lane scored from second.
Matthew Rivera singled to the shortstop and scored Tellier from third. Peltier was able to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. Rivera advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wilhite drew a four-pitch walk in his second at bat of the inning. Dobbins launched a three-run homer to right center. Scheffler doubled to left center. Bevis blasted a two-run home run to right center. The Cardinals collected 12 runs in the bottom of the seventh and took a 12-2 lead into the top of the seventh.
Tellier led off the bottom of eighth with a double down the right field line. Peltier followed with a double to left center and traded places with Tellier. Casey Turturici grounded out to first and moved Peltier to third. Dylan Grego picked up an RBI double to left center as Peltier scored. Ball State took a 14-2 lead into the ninth.
Owen Quinn tossed a scoreless ninth and BSU went on to win 14-2.
O'Donnell got the win and improved to 2-0 on the season. He went 7 1/3 innings and produced a career-high 13 strikeouts. He gave up two earned runs and scattered six hits. Quinn tossed 1 2/3 innings of hitless baseball. He struck out a career-high three batters.
Lane, Tellier, Peltier, Rivera, Wilhite, Scheffler, and Bevis all notched two hits on the day. Dobbins and Bevis tied for a game-high three RBIs.
Noah Johnson got the start on the mound for the Rockets. He went six innings with six strikeouts. He gave up one earned run on five hits. Brennan McCune picked up the loss and fell to 1-2 on the year. He went a 1/3 of an inning and gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits. Kyle Music closed out the game for Toledo and went 1 2/3 innings. He gave up seven earned runs on seven hits and had three strikeouts.
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Rockets. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
