Hilton Scores Game-Winner in Sudden Death Shootout Against IU
October 15, 2023 | Field Hockey
It is the first time since 2012 that the Cardinals have defeated the Hoosiers
MUNCIE, Ind. - In one of the most exciting games of the season at the Briner Sports Complex the Cardinals' Emma Hilton managed to score the game-winning goal in a sudden death shootout against the Indiana Hoosiers Sunday afternoon to seal the 3-2 victory for Ball State.Â
Â
It was the first time since 2012 that Ball State (6-8) had defeated Big Ten foe Indiana (5-10).
Â
"I think today was really important for us I told the team in the pregame that I just wanted us to get back to playing Ball State field hockey," Ball State head coach Caitlin Walsh said. "We have been in a rut lately, but they trusted in each other today and found a way to bounce back which says a lot about our team. I think this win was good for us moving forward considering we just have two more weekends left of regular season."
Â
From start to finish both teams were aggressive defensively making it hard for either squad to score despite their efforts. Maya Guinn managed to find the back of the cage first for the Cardinals off the assist from Paloma Gomez Rengifo with only 7:17 shaved off the clock to give BSU the early 1-0 advantage over IU. Ball State held Indiana scoreless up until the 14:51 mark in which the Hoosiers would knot the score, 1-1.
Â
After the game was evened a penalty stroke was awarded to the Hoosiers at the 24-minute mark to give IU the 2-1 lead against Ball State as both teams headed into intermission.Â
Â
A scoreless third quarter had Ball State frantically trying to tie the game in the final quarter. In just her second game back after an injury, Maureen Donegan netted the tying goal to make the score 2-2 versus the Hoosiers, sending the contest in overtime.Â
Â
In the sudden death shoot out Rachel Bohn and Fleur Knopert were successful giving Hilton the opportunity to go last and score the winning goal today.Â
Â
In goal, Hannnah Johnston picked up the win for the Cardinals with 13 saves for the day.Â
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will host its last home game of the season Friday against Appalachian State when it returns to Mid-American Conference action. The Cardinals will pay tribute to their seniors prior to the contest which begins at 1 pm ET.
