Men's Volleyball Defeats Tusculum in Five Sets
January 21, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - In their second-ever meeting, the Ball State men's volleyball team (2-2) defeated Tusculum (2-5) in five sets Saturday night in Worthen Arena.
It was a tightly contested first set between the Pioneers and the Cardinals. Ball State began to pull away late in the frame to go up 19-16 after some solid serves and a kill from middle blocker Vanis Buckholz. The Cardinals went onto win the set after a triple block and then a kill from sophomore Tinaishe Ndavazocheva.
The second and third sets were similar in play. A bit of a seesaw match in the second that saw it go to the very end. Some Tusculum service errors and some smart defensively plays by Ball State at the net allowed BSU to take the frame, 25-22.
The Pioneers made it a 2-1 match after winning the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth, Ball State jumped out to a late 19-17 advantage, but Tusculum kept the set close and knotted frame four, 19-19. The Pioneers went on to win 26-24 and send the match to an extra period.
The Cardinals dominated the final frame of play jumping ahead to a 6-2 advantage which would end up being too much for the Pioneers to overcome. Ball State went on to win the last set, 15-7.
For the game, Trevor Phillips led the squad with a career best 16 kills while Bryce Behrendt finished the night 12.
The Ball State men's tennis team will remain home Friday, Jan. 27 when it hosts Queens University of Charlotte at 7 pm ET
