January 21, 2023 | Men's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Senior Owen Chaye and junior Joey Garberick each picked up a pair of individual event wins, as well as a pool record each, to lead a strong Ball State men's swimming & diving effort versus Miami Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
In fact, the Cardinals (1-3) were able to pick up seven event wins on the day. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get past the RedHawks (2-3) who earned a 168-132 victory.
Chaye and Garberick started their dominance early, helping the 200 medley relay kick off the day with a first-place swim of 1:31.71. They were joined by sophomore Ethan Pheifer and senior Bryce Handshoe.
Four events later, Garberick would score his first individual win with a pool record time of 55.49 in the 100 breaststroke, besting his own mark of 56.67 set last season. He would complete the breaststroke sweep later in the meet, with a first-place effort of 2:04.19 in the 200.
Two events after Garberick's pool record, Chaye would pick up one of his own with a winning time of 20.72 in the 50 free, it was .04 faster than the previous mark of 20.76 set by Wester Kentucky's Kicker Vincill in 2000.
Chaye would go on to win the 100 freestyle (45.82) later in the meet, before swimming leadoff for the pool record setting 400 freestyle relay which clocked in at 3:04.47. He was joined on the swim by senior Jack Wolferd, Pheifer, and freshman Jacob Siewers as they surpassed the previous mark of 3:04.94 set in 1994.
The Cardinals also had success in the diving well, starting with freshman Porter Brovont earning an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark of 325.20 in a second-place effort on the 3M board.
Senior Wyatt Blake would follow by winning the 1M competition with a score of 297.30, just shy of the NCAA Zone mark of 300 for the board.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action with a pair of meets next weekend. The Cardinals will celebrate senior day versus Bellarmine Saturday at Noon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, before heading to Fishers High School for Sunday's Butler Invite.
