Ball State Men's Swimming & Diving Travels to Indiana State Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving program opens the second half of the 2022-23 campaign this weekend with a dual meet versus Southern Illinois hosted by Indiana State. The women will also be in action, competing against the host Sycamores and Salukis.
The meet will be held Saturday at the Vigo County Aquatic Center with the first races starting at 1 p.m. This will be the third dual meet, and fifth overall competition, for the men's team which owns a 1-1 record and has two third place finishes among the eight-team fields at the Indiana Intercollegiates (Oct. 22) and the Miami Invitational Dec. 1-3) so far this season.

Last time out Owen Chaye broke program records in the 50 freestyle (twice), the 100 freestyle, and as part of the 200 freestyle relay at the three-day Miami Invitational.

Chaye started the meet with a program-record time of 20.04 in the 50 freestyle prelims, topping his own mark of 20.11 set at last season's Mid-American Conference Championships.

His day only got better from there, as Chaye turned in a double record to help Ball State win the 200 freestyle relay, with an opening split of 19.91.

That effort was another new 50 freestyle mark and the first sub 20 second time in program history. It also paved the way for senior Jack Wolfred, freshman Jacob Siewers, and junior Joey Garberick to wrap up a program-record mark of 1:20.21 in the event.

Chaye closed the meet by setting the new standard in the 100 freestyle at 44.36.

Freshman Jacob Siewers had strong swims in the 100 and 200 freestyles, turning in the fifth and sixth-fastest times in program history at 45.02 and 1:39.87, respectively. Max Kruglov also joined the record books with his 200 IM of 1:52.81, placing him 10th in program history.

Another strong performance came from senior Bryce Handshoe, who became just the second swimmer in program history go sub-1:50 in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 1:49.33 in the finals. Michael Burns also had a solid showing, finishing with a time of 56.72 in the 100 breaststroke to places him on BSU's all-time list.

Chaye and Siewers closed out the meet with one more solid effort, combining with senior Jack Wolfred and junior Joey Garberick for the fourth-fastest 400 freestyle relay on BSU's all-time list at 3:01.24.

IN THE MAC RANKINGS – MEN:
In the latest NCAA Division I Top Time Rankings as compiled by CollegeSwimming.com, the Cardinals have 10 student-athletes ranked in scoring position in their respective heading into the Indiana State Matchup.
