
Ball State Sweeps Doubleheader Against Kent State, Extends Winning Streak to 11

With the wins, Ball State improved to 32-14 overall and 26-4 in Mid-American Conference contests, while Kent State fell to 17-26 overall and 12-17 in the MAC.
Cole was absolutely phenomenal for the day as he belted two home runs and posted five RBIs. Peltier produced a four-hit game in game two and finished the day with three RBIs. Hunter Dobbins finished Sunday with four hits. Nick Powell, Amir Wright, Cole, and Justin Conant all notched three hits for the day.
Wright has reached safely in 45 of the 46 games this season to make it 19 straight and he extended his hitting streak to nine games. Powell extended his hitting streak to eight games, while Dobbins extended his streak to six games. Trenton Quartermaine has reached base safely in 22-straight contests.
Game One – Ball State 9, Kent State 5
The Golden Flashes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Dobbins led off the top of the second with a double down the right field line. Cole flied out in foul territory to right which allowed Dobbins to tag up and move to third. Adam Tellier grounded out to second, but Dobbins was able to score on the play. The Cardinals cut the lead to 2-1 after the top of the second.
Kent State extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second.
Wright drew a two-out walk in the top of the third to get things started for the Cardinals. Quartermaine singled through the right side and moved Wright to third. Powell came up big with a double to left field that scored Wright and Quartermaine. Ball State cut the deficit to just one, 4-3, after the top of the third.
Cole tied the game in the top of the fourth with a solo homer to deep right.
Conant led off the top of the fifth with a single to short. Wright singled to short, and Conant was able to advance to third on a throwing error. Quartermaine reached on a fielder's choice as Wright was out at second and Conant scored. Powell singled to center to give the Cardinals runners on first and second. Dobbins grounded out to the pitcher and moved Powell and Quartermaine to second and third, respectively. Cole belted an opposite field home run to left to drive in three runs. Ball State took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Kent State added another run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Ball State lead to 8-5.
Wright and Quartermaine were both hit by a pitch to start the top of the seventh. Powell moved Wright and Quartermaine up a base with a sac bunt to third. Dobbins notched an RBI single through the left side to plate Wright. The Cardinals went on to claim a 9-5 victory.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start in game one and went three innings. He struck out six batters and surrendered four runs, three earned, on four hits. Ryan Brown picked up the win in four innings of relief. He improved to 3-2 on the year. Brown struck out eight batters and gave up just one earned run on three hits.
Cole led the Cardinals with four RBIs on two home runs. Powell finished game one with a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs. Dobbins notched a 2-for-4 performance in game one with an RBI.
Ben Cruikshank picked up the loss in the start for Kent State and fell to 2-3 on the year. He went four innings with two strikeouts and gave up six earned runs on six hits. Collin Romel went three innings in relief with three earned runs on three hits and struck out two batters.
Game Two – Ball State 9, Kent State 3
Like game one, the Golden Flashes got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first as they scored a run on two hits.
The Cardinals were unfazed and responded with two runs in the top of the second. Peltier ripped an RBI triple off the right field wall as Tellier, who got things started with a two-out double down the right field line, scored. After a CJ Horn walk, Conant singled through the right side to score Peltier and give BSU a 2-1 lead after the top of the second.
Dobbins recorded a two-out single to center to give the Cardinals some momentum in the top of the third. Cole Walked to put runners on first and second. Tellier singled to center field to plate Dobbins from second. Peltier collected another RBI as he drove in Cole on a single to left field.
Justin Miknis sent a ball deep to right field, but Powell was able to scale the wall and rob Miknis of a would-be double for the first out of the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Flashes were able to load the bases, but Ty Johnson was able to get out of the jam unscathed.
Peltier led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line. A sac bunt by Horn moved Peltier to third. Conant recorded the RBI with a ground out as Peltier scored. BSU held a 5-1 lead as the game went to the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Flashes scored a run on a wild pitch and cut the Cardinal lead to 5-2 after six innings.
Powell led off the top of the seventh with a single to left field. Dobbins followed with a single to left center and advanced Powell to third. Cole drove in Powell with a double down the right field line. Tellier was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Peltier delivered a sac fly to right field as Dobbins tagged up on the play. The Cardinals took a 7-2 lead into the bottom half of the seventh.
Wright led off the top of the eighth with a triple down the right field line. Quartermaine ground out to first, but Wright was able to score from third. Ball State held an 8-2 advantage into the home half of the eighth.
Peltier recorded a one-out double to right center to get things started for the Cardinals in the top of the ninth. Conant produced an RBI single to center to score Peltier from second. The Cardinals took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Kent State added a run on a solo home run by Hunter Klotz, but Nate Dohm was able to strikeout the next two batters to give Ball State the 9-3 win.
Johnson picked up the win and moved to 7-2 on the year. He went six innings with five strikeouts and surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits. Nate Dohm picked up his second save of the season behind three solid innings of relief. He surrendered one earned run on one hit and struck out five batters.
Peltier went 4-for-4 in game two and was a home run shy of the cycle. He drove in three runs and scored three runs. Conant added a 2-for-4 game with three RBIs.
Payton Cariaco picked up the loss and fell to 0-3 on the season. He went four innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out three batters. Calvin Bickerstaff went two innings in relief with three strikeouts and surrendered three earned runs on five hits. Max Rippl went three innings and struck out two batters and surrendered two earned runs on three hits.
Ball State and Kent State close out the four-game series on Monday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
