Ball State Takes Flight to Kent State for Weekend Series

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team is scheduled to be back in action on Saturday, May 7, for a four-game Mid-American Conference series at Kent State. The series is slated for a single game Saturday, a doubleheader on Sunday, and the final game on Monday.
The Cardinals are coming off a series sweep of the Central Michigan Chippewas and took over the No. 1 spot in the MAC standings. Sam Klein and Zach Cole swept the MAC weekly honors as the Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week, respectively. Ball State enters the weekend on an eight-game winning streak and are 29-4 overall and 23-4 in league games. Kent State boasts a 17-23 overall mark and a 12-14 conference record.
Kloser Klein
Klein was outstanding for the Cardinals out of the bullpen against CMU and earned MAC Pitcher of the Week for his efforts. He recorded two saves and moved his MAC-leading total to nine. He recorded a two-inning save in the series opener against CMU and added another on Saturday's 10-7 victory. He picked up a win in Sunday's game as he went 1 1/3 innings in relief with three strikeouts. He held CMU scoreless for 4 1/3 innings in three appearances and surrendered just two hits. He notched six strikeouts and three walks for the weekend. This is Klein's second Pitcher of the Week accolade this season. Klein solidified his role as a closer as he has nine saves, which is tied for 16th in the NCAA and leads the MAC. He has struck out 37 batters in 26 1/3 innings on the mound. Opponents are hitting just .156 against him.
Triple Threat
Cole was outstanding at the plate for the Cardinals against the Chippewas and was awarded the MAC Player of the Week for his performance. He posted a .500 batting average and led the team with three home runs. He notched his NCAA-leading seventh triple during the weekend. He produced a team-high nine RBIs to go along with a team-best 1.286 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was just as stellar. He recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He made a phenomenal diving catch on a full sprint in the left field gap. He also made a leaping catch as he crashed into the wall, both of those catches kept the Chippewas off the scoreboard. For the season, Cole is second on the team with a .331 average. He has produced 28 runs, drove in 25 runs, seven home runs, and has three doubles with 13 walks. Cole leads the team with a .637 slugging percentage.
Maloney Magic
Rich Maloney won his 900th game as a head coach at NIU earlier this season. He moved his win total to 906 after a series sweep of Central Michigan. He is currently ranked 16th among active NCAA DI coaches. He is currently ranked 122nd in all-time wins across all divisions. He is 85th among NCAA DI coaches all-time.
The Wright Stuff
Amir Wright has reached base safely in 42 of the 43 games this season. He leads the team with 40 runs scored and leads the team with a .365 batting average.
