Cardinals Fly High Over Golden Flashes

KENT, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team returned to the diamond on Saturday for game one of a four-game stint against Mid-American Conference foe Kent State. The Cardinals were led by a phenomenal pitching performance by Tyler Schweitzer en route to a 12-0 victory.
Schweitzer threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks. He improved to 8-2 on the season.
Amir Wright continued to stay hot for the Cardinals. He extended his hitting streak to seven games and has now reached safely in 43 of the 44 games this season. Trenton Quartermaine extended his streak of reaching base safely to 20 games.
Wright led BSU with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Nick Powell, Ryan Peltier, and Justin Conant all added two hits each.
The Cardinals improved to 30-14 overall and 24-4 in MAC games, while the Golden Flashes fell to 17-24 overall and 12-15 in league play.
Wright started the game off with a single to center field. Back-to-back walks by Quartermaine and Powell loaded the bases with no outs. Hunter Dobbins belted a triple to left center that cleared the bases. Zach Cole reached on an error by the third baseman as Dobbins scored on the play. Peltier doubled to left field to give BSU runners on second and third. CJ Horn grounded out to short that allowed Cole to score.
Wright reached on a throwing error and advanced to second to start the top of the second. Quartermaine grounded out to shortstop and allowed Wright to move up to third. Powell drove a ball to left field that Wright was able to tag up and score on to extend the Ball State lead to 6-0.
Adam Tellier dropped down a bunt single with one out in the top of the third. Peltier recorded his second double of the game and put runners on second and third with one out. Horn grounded out, but drove in another run as Tellier scored. Conant followed with an RBI single to right field to extend the Cardinal lead to 8-0.
Peltier led off the top of the fifth inning with a walk. Horn reached on a fielder's choice and Peltier advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Conant dropped down a perfectly placed bunt for a single to load the bases. Wright drove in two runs with a single through the right side to make the score 10-0. Powell drove in Conant with an RBI single to center and put Ball State on top 11-0 after five innings.
Powell led off the top of the seventh with a single. Dobbins reached on an error and put two runners on for the Cardinals. Cole reached safely on a fielder's choice as Dobbins was out at second. Tellier reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Powell. Ball State took a 12-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and Schweitzer took care of the rest as the run rule was enforced.
Eric Chalus got the start for Kent State and went 3 1/3 innings. He surrendered eight runs, six earned, on six hits and struck out two batters. Chalus fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss. Asher Soltis went 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits. Brody Ware added 2 1/3 innings and surrendered one earned run.
The Cardinals and Golden Flashes are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
