May 01, 2026 | Baseball
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team got out to an early 2-0 lead but fell 8-3 in the series opener at Toledo on Friday afternoon at Scott Park.
The Cardinals (21-24, 14-11 Mid-American Conference) plated the two runs in the top of the second on a Max Kalk sacrifice fly and Charlie Keller RBI single, but the host Rockets (22-24, 16-9 MAC) responded with four tallies in the bottom half of the frame and would play from ahead for the remainder of the day.
After Toledo added one run each in the fifth and sixth innings, Keller drove in Kalk on another RBI single in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Rockets plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the day's final scoring.
Keller produced the two hits and two RBI while walking once, and Gavin Balius collected two hits as well as the other Cardinal with multiple knocks for the game.
Brady Strawmyer (1-1) started his first MAC game and struck out two in 4.1 innings of work but allowed five runs to be hit with the loss.
Toledo had three batters with two hits each including Charlie Scholvin who hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. Nathan Leininger (8-1) tossed 118 pitches and worked 7.0 innings of three-run ball
to earn the win.
Game two of the set is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
