Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team fell 20-3 in the series finale at Toledo on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park.
The Cardinals (21-26, 14-13 Mid-American Conference) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning on a two-run double by Brett Griffiths, but the host Rockets (24-24, 18-9 MAC) regained the lead in the bottom half of the third with one tally and put up nine runs in the fourth and seven in the sixth to secure the seven-inning win.
After Toledo scored three times in the first frame, Ball State responded with an RBI single from Gavin Balius to score Griffiths, who had tripled earlier in the inning, to cut the deficit to 3-1. Griffiths brought home Ryan Muizelaar and Kenskey Thomas on his double to left center in the third that tied the contest.
Balius joined Griffiths as Cardinals with two hits for the game. John Chambers (4-5) struck out three but allowed eight runs in 3.2 innings of work to suffer the loss for Ball State.
Toledo starting pitcher Michael Fliss (2-1) earned the win thanks to nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of three-run ball (one earned). Liam Arsich, Cole Cahill and Alex McCranie paced the offense for the hosts with three hits each.
The next scheduled game for Ball State is Tuesday night at Purdue.
