Cardinals Down Highlanders in Four Tightly-Contested Sets

Ball State defeats NJIT behind Mandailaris’ 21 kills
NEWARK, N.J. – The Ball State men's volleyball team earned a four-set victory (26-24, 25-22, 28-30, 36-34) over NJIT Friday night, 3-1. The Cardinals improved to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play, while the Highlanders dropped to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action.
Ball State was led Angelos Mandilaris with 21 kills on a .432 attack percentage. He also added five block assists and four digs. Kaleb Jenness contributed 18 kills to go along with six digs and four block assists.
Quinn Isaacson distributed 50 assists in addition to eight digs and two block assists.
As a team, the Cardinals racked up 16 blocks with six different individuals contributing to the defense at the net.
NJIT came out of the gates on fire, taking seven of the first 10 points. However, Ball State began to chip away and eventually took the lead behind a 5-1 run to make it 19-18. The Highlanders would knot the set back up at 23-23, but two kills from Jenness highlighted a 3-1 mini-run to take the set, 26-24.
The second set remained close throughout as neither squad was able to separate by more than three, each maintaining that margin once during the set.
The Cardinals held a 10-7 lead behind kills from Vanis Buckholz, Jenness and Mandilaris, but NJIT would go on to take 14 of the next 22 points to hold a 21-18 lead. Ball State then captured seven of the next eight points to earn a 2-0 lead, 25-22.
In the third set, the Highlanders held a 4-point advantage three times before the Cardinals gained the lead at 18-17 after an ace from Jenness. NJIT came back and took the set, 30-28, despite being at match point at three times.
The fourth set continued the back-and-forth affair and needed a few extra points to be decided. With the Cardinals at match point at 25-24, the Highlanders took the next two points, looking to extend the match.
Ball State reached match point five more times before finally finishing the set on a kill from Mandilaris, 32-30, and match, 3-1.
The Cardinals return to the court Saturday night at Princeton with first serve set for 5 p.m. ET.
