Ball State set to tee off spring slate with annual match play event
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's golf team is set to tee off its spring season by hosting the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event. The annual tournament, slated for Feb. 7-8, is scheduled to take place in Dade City, Fla. at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
"We are very excited to have the chance to compete in our match play event," head coach Mike Fleck said. "It comes at a perfect time on the calendar and being able to bring six guys to compete is nice. The EY Match Play is a great format, and we are anxious to see where our guys are. Our goal is to post a bunch of individual match victories and go 3-0 as a team."
The Cardinals will be joined on the par-72, 7,153-yard course by Dayton, DePaul, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Loyola Chicago, Toledo and Xavier. With the event in match-play format, Ball State, who is seeded third, will square off with sixth-seeded Dayton in the opening round Monday at 8:30 a.m. ET off the 10th, 11th and 13th holes.
The Cardinals will then face either No. 2 seed Eastern Michigan or No. 7 seed Xavier in the second round Monday afternoon. The final round is set to take place Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Ball State will trot out a 6-man lineup consisting of Evan Bone, Griffin Hare, Ali Khan, Colin Nasser, Joey Ranieri and Joey Wiseman for the two-day tournament.
Formerly known as the Mid-American Match Play, the event was renamed in 2015 in honor of Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January 2014 at the age of 80. Yestingsmeier spent 36 seasons leading the Ball State men's golf program, including 31 in a dual role as sports information director and golf coach.
He guided the Cardinals to 107 tournament titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. For his success, he was enshrined in the Ball State Athletics, Golf Coaches Association and Indiana Golf halls of fame.
