Cardinals Drop Two on Day Two of Swig & Swine

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team was back on the diamond on Saturday for day two of the Swig & Swine Collegiate Classic at The Shipyard Park. The Cardinals fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the morning contest, 11-1, followed by a 9-0 loss to Air Force.
The Cardinals fell to 1-2 on the season, while Iowa improved to 2-0 and Air Force improved to 1-1.
Amir Wright has been a solid lead-off hitter and has led off all three games this season with a base hit. The Cardinals tallied six hits across both games today. Wright finished the day 2-for-7 and was the only player to record multiple hits. Trenton Quartermaine, Ryan Peltier, Zach Cole, and Zach Lane produced the other hits for BSU.
Iowa 11, Ball State 1
The Hawkeyes got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals were able to cut into the lead on an RBI single by Lane that scored Cole.
Iowa extended its lead to 6-1 after a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Hawkeyes added a run in the bottom of the seventh to go up 7-1 after seven innings of play. Iowa tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth and went on to win the game 11-1.
Tyler Schweitzer picked up the loss behind 4 1/3 innings of work with five earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks. Tyler Ruetschle went 1 2/3 innings in relief with three strikeouts and gave up one earned run. Tanner Knapp went one inning with two strikeouts and surrendered one earned run. Jacob Hartlaub notched a 1/3 of an inning and gave up four earned runs with one strikeout. Mac Ayres closed out the pitching for the Cardinals with 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout.
Connor Shultz started on the mound for Iowa and tallied nine strikeouts and one earned run in four innings of work. Brody Brecht picked up the win with four innings in relief and seven strikeouts. Will Christophersen added an inning and struck out four batters.
Air Force 9, Ball State 0
The Falcons got on the board in the first inning on a sac fly. In the second, Air Force used two home runs to extend its lead to 5-0. The Falcons tacked on another run in the fifth off a double to left center. Air Force tallied two runs in the top of the seventh and one more in the top of the eighth to win the game 9-0.
Nate Dohm got the loss in his first collegiate start. He went two innings, struck out three and gave up five runs, four of which were earned. Luke Schafer went 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and surrendered one earned run. Ty Weatherly added 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and gave up two runs, none earned. Maxwell McKee collected three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work and gave up one unearned run. Casey Bargo pitched a shutout inning with two strikeouts.
Seungmin Shim picked up the victory behind six innings on the mound with two strikeouts and scattered just two hits. Sawyer Hawks went three innings with four strikeouts.
Ball State finishes the Swig & Swine with a matchup against Army on Sunday at 10 a.m.
