February 17, 2022 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team begins the 2022 campaign in Charleston, South Carolina, for the Swig & Swine College Classic on Friday. The Cardinals will face the Bucknell Bison, Iowa Hawkeyes, Air Force Falcons, and the Army Black Knights over a three-day span.
Despite losing three of its top-three pitchers from a season ago, Ball State was voted to finish second by the MAC coaches in the Preseason Coaches' Poll announced earlier this week. Along with one first-place vote, the Cardinals collected two votes to win the MAC Tournament.
The Cardinals will have a new look in the starting rotation as Trennor O'Donnell and Ty Johnson combined for 11 starts a season ago are projected to be in the starting rotation. Joining the rotation this weekend are Tyler Schweitzer and Nate Dohm. Ball State returns three of its four top hitters from a season ago. The series is split 1-1, with the Cardinals winning the last matchup 14-6 on February 24, 2018, at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic. The pitching matchup is slated to be Tyler Schweitzer against Connor Schultz. Schultz is a graduate transfer from Butler. Last season, Shultz posted a 2-5 mark with one complete game.
