Offensive Outburst Propels Cardinals Past Bison

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Hunter Dobbins went deep twice, as the Ball State baseball team defeated Bucknell in the season opener at The Shipyard Park on Friday. The Cardinals start the season 1-0, while the Bison fall to 0-1.
Amir Wright started the game off with a single to right field. The Cardinals were unable to get a run on the board after the lead-off hitter reached to start the game.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start on the mound for Ball State. After he hit the lead-off hitter, he induced the 4-6-3 double play to get out of the first inning.
Nick Powell led off the top of the second with a solo home run to left field. O'Donnell followed with a three up, three down inning in the bottom of the second.
Justin Conant drew a one-out walk to get things started in the top of the third. Wright followed with a walk to give BSU runners on first and second with one out. Trenton Quartermaine grounded out to first, but moved Conant and Wright to third and second, respectively. Ryan Peltier walked to load the bases for Powell. Powell battled at the plate and drew a walk, which allowed Conant to score from third.
The Bison had two runners on in the bottom of the third, but O'Donnell was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brendan Lowery gave Bucknell its first lead of the day with a three-run homer to left field to give the Bison a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals were unfazed and clawed their way back in the top of the fifth. Quartermaine drew a one-out walk. Powell followed with a two-out single to short. Dobbins came up huge for BSU as he launched a pitch to left center, for a three-run home run. Decker Scheffler drew a four-pitch walk and then stole second. Zach Lane reached on an error and Scheffler scored on the play to put Ball State up 6-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chris Cannizzaro hit a two-run homer to cut the Cardinal lead to 6-5.
Conant singled to third to start the top of the sixth for Ball State. After a balk advanced him to second, Wright grounded out to the pitcher and moved Conant to third with one out. Quartermaine grounded out to second but drove in Conant from third. The Cardinals took a 7-5 lead into the top of the seventh.
In the seventh, Dobbins led off with a solo drive to left center and extended the Cardinal lead to 8-5, which turned out to be crucial.
The game remained 8-5 until the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyler Dunn drove in a run with a single to left field. After a walk loaded the bases for the Bison, a wild pitch allowed Bucknell to score and cut the lead to 8-7. Sam Klein recorded a strikeout and kept the Bison from tying the game.
The Cardinals were unable to add any insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Klein struck out three batters to secure the 8-7 victory for the Cardinals.
Dobbins had an outstanding day in his Cardinal debut with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, including two home runs and four RBIs. Powell added a 2-for-4 game with a home run and two RBIs. Conant, Wright, and Adam Christianson all collected a hit.
O'Donnell picked up a no decision behind 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out four but gave up five earned runs. Jake Lewis pitched 1 1.3 innings in relief with three strikeouts and earned the win. Andre Orselli notched four strikeouts and two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Klein had a stellar stat line and picked up the save as he struck out four of the five batters he faced.
Jacob Corson led Bucknell with a 2-for-5 day at the plate with a double and a run scored. Lowery provided the power with a three-run homer. Greame Carroll picked up the loss for the Bison.
