October 07, 2022 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State field hockey true freshman Fleur Knopert hit the game-winning goal in overtime to push the Cardinals past Ohio University by a score of 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
With the win, Ball State improved to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in Mid-American Conference action which is the best league start for the Cardinals since the 2006 season. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-6 on the season and 1-3 in MAC action.
"It was great to see us get ahead early today, and I'm proud of our team for pushing through and finding a way to end it in overtime," Ball State head field hockey coach Caitlin Walsh said. "This team's fight and never give up mentality continues to impress me."
Knopert netted the game-winning goal at the 67:44 mark in overtime after aggressively attacking the circle. Knopert though did get some help from her teammate senior Gina Caravaglia who was awarded the assist. The goal was Knopert's seventh of the season.
It was a defensive battle in the opening minutes of play. The Cardinals finally broke through off a shot from senior Caitlin Grodzicki to take an early 1-0 lead over the Bobcats at the 13:58 mark. Ball State held Ohio scoreless up until the 41:55 mark of the third period and took a 1-0 edge over the Bobcats at intermission.
After the game was evened in the third stanza, both teams turned up their defense playing aggressively the remainder of regulation to send the contest into overtime.
This was the third overtime game for Ball State this season and second in just a week in MAC play. The Cardinals have won all three of their overtime contests this season.
The win was awarded to the Cardinals goalkeeper, Hannah Johnston who faced 10 corners today while also registering 10 saves.
The Ball State field hockey team continues its two-game fall break weekend at home on Sunday when the Cardinals face Michigan State at the Briner Sports Complex at 1 pm ET.
