Field Hockey’s Valiant Effort Comes Up Short Against Big Ten Foe Michigan State
October 09, 2022 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (6-6) put up a good fight against Big Ten foe Michigan State (6-6), but ultimately fell, 5-3, to the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Junior Michaela Graney, senior Kerrianne McClay and freshman Fleur Knopert all three landed on the scoresheet for the Cardinals, with Knopert's goal tying the game at the start of the second period.
Senior Libby Kraus, junior Emma Hilton and senior Angel Nkosi each picked up an assist today.
Senior Ally Butler started in goal for the Cardinals and registered six saves.
"There's a lot to take away from todays game," Ball State head field hockey coach Caitlin Walsh said. "We moved the ball well and had some nice finishes. Defensively, we needed to be tighter and we definitely have some things to work on this week. Michigan state took advantage of our mistakes and they were a strong opponent."
Michigan State started the game on top over Ball State with some excellent penalty corner executions along with some top-notch offense to take a quick 2-0 edge over the Cardinals. Ball State responded with back-to-back goals of its own and would knot the game 2-2 with 11:42 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Spartans would respond taking back the lead with 14:43 remaining in the first period.
The Cardinals answered at the start of the second quarter of play with the equalizer from Knopert off the assist from Nkosi to make the score 3-3. It was Knopert's eighth goal of the season.
With the score tied at intermission, Michigan State added two more goals right after the break to take a 5-3 advantage over Ball State. The Cardinals pushed for more scoring the remainder of the game but could not find it despite some penalty corner opportunities.
Both teams were aggressive defensively with Graney leading the charge with three defensive saves.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to Mid-American Conference action on Friday, Oct. 14 when the Cardinals play at Bellarmine. The contest will be held at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky., at 1 pm ET.
