Field Hockey Shuts Out Bellarmine in MACtion Friday
October 14, 2022 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Ball State field hockey team (7-6, 4-1 MAC) beat Bellarmine (4-10, 2-3 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The 4-1 MAC record is the best start under first-year head coach Caitlin Walsh since the 1999 league season. That year the Cardinals began conference action with a 5-1 ledger.
"Today we showed up from start to finish," said Walsh. "It was a goal of ours today to set the tone and play our hockey from the beginning. We played good team hockey and connected well with each other all over the field."
After a scoreless first period that consisted of a strong defensive stance between the Cardinals and the Knights, junior Michaela Graney scored her third goal of the season in the 23rd minute of the second stanza to give Ball State an early 1-0 lead, a lead that the Cardinals were able to hold onto at intermission.
This week's MAC Offensive Player of the Week recipient freshman Fleur Knopert extended the lead for the Cardinals in the third quarter finding the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season. She has now scored a goal in eight of the Cardinals' 13 games this season. The nine goals are the best showing for a Cardinal since the 2010 season. Currently, Knopert ranks fourth among her conference peers this season in goals scored.
Emma Hilton and Libby Kraus both were credited with assists today on Graney's goal which came off a penalty corner.
Goalkeeper Hannah Johnston secured another win on the season, playing the full 60 minutes and making five saves on seven shots from Bellarmine.
The Ball State field hockey team remains in Louisville for a non-conference matchup against UofL on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET at Trager Stadium.
